Komen More Than Pink Walk | April 2019 E A R LY DET E C T ION SAVES LIVES SUPPORTING THOSE IN THEIR FIGHT AGAINST BREAST CANCER On Friday, March 15th, the Susan G. Komen Ozark Foundation hosted the annual Promise Circle Luncheon at Mermaid's Grill in Fayetteville to award the 2019 grant recipients. This year's grant recipients service ten counties throughout the Northwest Arkansas area by working together to achieve the Komen Ozark Foundation's goal of reducing breast cancer related deaths by 50% by 2020. There were six grant recipients in 2019: Community Clinic, the Cox Foundation, Madison County Health Coalition, Mercy of Fort Smith, North Arkansas Partnership for Health Education, and Washington Regional Cancer Support Home. In addition to awarding grant recipients, the Foundation hosted an exciting keynote speaker, oncologist Kathy Miller, M.D. Miller works with several hospitals throughout the Indianapolis area to reduce to the number of deaths associated with breast cancer. She graduated from Johns Hopkins Medical School and dedicated her life to oncology after watching her mother suffer from breast cancer. Dr. Miller shared her very moving experiences with the luncheon guests, as well as the amazing and innovative work she has done in the field of breast cancer treatment research. Miller and her team have been working to identify the many different causes of breast cancer, because identifying the cause helps to develop better methods to cure and prevent the disease altogether. Dr. Miller's research on causes of breast cancer focused on different samples of normal breast tissue from subjects of different demographics to best pinpoint what factors are preexisting conditions for breast cancer. Dr. Miller went on to talk about her successes at treating early stage breast cancer and how her work has helped those in remission. Susan G.
