Brother Lubrano was recognized for manu- facturing leadership in specialty metal systems as corporate president and manufacturing industry spokesman. Brother Alfonso T. "Al" Lubrano retired as President of Materion Technical Materials (formerly Technical Materials, Inc.) of Lincoln, R.I., with a company sales volume of $80 million. From 1992 to 2015, he served as President of MTM, a manufacturer of specialty metal systems used in complex electronic and electrical components. As President of MTM, he managed a strategic task force that developed a new environmental product. The environmental product was a lead-free solder, created while he was at Engelhard and remains one of the patent holders. He is a co-founder of the Rhode Island Manufacturers Association and was its Chairman from 1998 to 2013. Al was on the Board of the National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) from 2005 to 2015, and a member of its Executive Committee (2010-14) and Finance Committee (2013-14). He served on the NAM US-China Business Relations Task Force (2007-09) and the NAM Small to Medium Business Group (Chairman, 2013-14). From 2002 to 2005, Al was a member of the Rhode Island Economic Development Policy Council, appointed by Governor Donald Carcieri. In October 2008, along with 11 other executives, Brother Lubrano attended a private meeting with President George W. Bush in the White House and, later, Senators and Representatives, to garner support for TARP and its ultimate passage. Al served as the Chairman of the Rhode Island Career and Technical Education Board of Trustees, and continues to serve on the board, appointed by the Governor of Rhode Island, Gina Raimondo. Brother Lubrano also serves as a member of the board of Jarvis Cutting Tools and of Lee's Morvillo Group. Brother Lubrano has served in various community volunteer positions, with the Boy Scouts of America as Pack Master (Cub Scouts) and Troup Committee Chair (Boy Scouts), as well as serving as an officer of Save the Bay and the Barrington, R.I., Jaycees. He received his B.S. in Management Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1971 and his MBA, Cum Laude, from Boston University in 1973. He is a member of Beta Gamma Sigma (International Business Honor Society) and Epsilon Delta Sigma (Management Honor Society). The Significant Sig Award (www.sigmachi. org/significant-sigs) recognizes alumni who have accomplished outstanding success in their professional or civic activities. Al joins other RPI Brothers who were honored previously. His picture will be added to the eight others in the Alumni Room of the Pomeroy Chapter House at 58 Pinewoods. Al Lubrano '70 and the Road to Success Meet Our Newest Significant Sig T he winter edition of The Magazine of Sigma Chi featured Bob Jones '73 and the announcement of his new book, A Condensed History of the Sigma Chi Fraternity: 1855 to 2018. Bob condensed more than 20,000 pages of memorability and the eight volumes of history from 1855 through 1980 written by Grand Historians into one volume. Bob's collection of Sigma Chi memorabilia is the largest outside of the official Sigma Chi Museum in Evanston, Ill. Regarded as one of the most knowledgeable Sigma Chi historians, he has never served as the official Grand Historian. Bob is a Master Ritual Peer and trainer of Ritual Peers, an intensive training and certification for members on the Sigma Chi ritual and our history. "When I went to college and joined, I was a young man who was in search of my own way in life," Bob says. "When I walked in the front door of [Delta Psi] at Rensselaer in 1969, I was very much a young man in search of himself. I feel like when I left those doors and graduated in May 1973, I had found my way. I really became a man in Sigma Chi. I stayed involved when I moved back to North Carolina. It's been a labor of love ever since." One of the surprises Bob discovered during his work is that our pledge manual suggests that the "Spirit of Sigma Chi" was attributed to the Founder's era. He was able to identify that it only dates from the 1950s. A Condensed History of Sigma Chi Fraternity: 1855 to 2018 can be ordered at: www.sigmachi.org/ history-book.
