A new facility would enable the college to add classes not currently offered, including fire investigation/arson certification, thermal image school, vehicle extrication school, high angle rescue technician and other types of fire and rescue special training. e facility would include classrooms, live fire buildings, apparatus bays, technical rescue areas, and other specialized training grounds. In addition, the training center would partner with the Sheriff's Office in using its driving track and possibly space for an outdoor shooting range. More information at co.cumberland.nc.us. T he Cumberland County NC Works Career Center wishes to remind residents who lost a job as a result of Hurricane Florence that employment opportunities are still available through an $18.5 million National Dislocated Worker Grant awarded to North Carolina last year in response to Hurricane Florence. e U.S. Department of Labor awarded the $18.5 million grant to the state, following a request from the N.C. Department of Commerce Division of Workforce Solutions. e program is for residents of the 28 counties declared national disaster areas including Cumberland County. Residents of these counties may be employed in jobs that support either clean-up and recovery or humanitarian assistance to residents of the affected areas. Participants in the grant would be employed by nonprofits, government Hurricane Recovery Jobs Still Available agencies and other employers who fit the criteria of an approved worksite. Worksites must generally be on either public property or land owned by not-for-profit agencies. Workers may be eligible for jobs under the grant by being temporarily or permanently laid off as a consequence of the hurricane, or by meeting certain other criteria. A grant approved in response to Hurricane Matthew in 2016 expired Sept. 30, 2018, provided employment to 668 people. Cumberland County residents who wish to apply for jobs through the grant program should visit the Cumberland County NC Works Career Center located at 414 Ray Ave., Fayetteville.
