FEBRUARY 20-26, 2019 UCW 29 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Hair of the dog In a whole new twist on stomach pumping, doctors in Quang Tri, Vietnam, saved 48-year-old Nguy- en Van Nhat's life in January by transfusing 15 cans of beer INTO his stomach. As Dr. Le Van Lam explained to the Daily Mail, alcohol contains both methanol and ethanol, and the liver breaks down ethanol first. But after a person stops drinking, the stomach and intestines con- tinue to release alcohol into the bloodstream — even if the drinker has lost consciousness — and alco- hol levels continue to rise. In Nhat's case, upon arrival at the hospital, his blood methanol level was 1,119 times higher than the appropriate limit. Doctors ad- ministered one can of beer every hour to slow down his metaboliz- ing of methanol, which gave them time to perform dialysis. Nhat spent three weeks in the hospital before returning home. [Daily Mail, 1/16/2019] Names in the news Your giggle for the week: Dur- ing a Jan. 17 special program on ITV Westcountry in the United Kingdom about how police forces are suffering under budget cuts, a certain officer interviewed for the show got more attention for his name than for his opinions about the budget. PC Rob Banks has un- doubtedly heard clever remarks about his name all his life, re- ported Plymouth Live, but Twitter users from as far away as Australia found it newly hilarious. [Plym- outh Live, 1/18/2019] The entrepreneurial spirit A 19-year-old man from Nice, France, has received a four-month (suspended) sentence for a clever plot he hatched in September. The man, known only as Adel, removed a PlayStation 4 from a supermarket shelf on Sept. 17 and took it to the produce aisle, where he weighed it and printed out a price sticker for fruit. Then he used the self-check- out line to pay and left the store with a $389 piece of electronics for about $10. Adel sold the PlaySta- tion for $114 to buy a train ticket. The next day, he tried the same scheme, but police caught him in the act. He will only have to serve his sentence if he re-offends, re- ported Kotaku.com. Question: I would like to know why PBS's "Call the Midwife" is ignored by all of the awards shows. Could it pos- sibly be because it isn't violent, has compassion and has prominent female characters? — Ellen Matt Roush: Putting one's under- standable cynicism aside, I figure "Midwife's" low profile on the U.S. awards circuit — it has been nomi- nated for a variety of awards in the U.K. — may have more to do with the fact that in its earliest and best seasons, "Midwife" was crowded out, along with most other British imports, by the global success of "Downton Abbey." It has been around long enough now that it just doesn't make much noise. Question: Is "e Crown" ever return- ing? We are waiting with bated breath to see the next season. — Jetty You and millions of others, including me. Netflix hasn't announced a time- table for the show's return — and with streaming it can take a while because the entire season must be finished, in- cluding post-production, before it can be made available. All we know for sure is that the new season will air sometime this year, and with Olivia Colman (an Oscar contender for "e Favourite") as the queen and "Outlander" fan favorite Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip, there's plenty to be excited about. To submit questions to TV Critic Matt Roush, go to: tvinsider.com by Damian Holbrook Cheers to "Project Blue Book" for getting the truth out there. Smart, styl- ish and probing (in a good way!), His- tory's scripted period piece starring Aidan Gillen and Michael Malarkey is a freaky, fact-based look at the govern- ment's hunt for UFOs that plays like "e X-Files: e Early Years" without all the sexual tension. Jeers to "Celebrity Big Brother" for showing Jonathan Bennett the door. As one of the only likable houseguests in this roster, the "Mean Girls" alum and ebullient Food Network host deserved far more time to play the game over his much less fetch roomies. And yes, we're talking about you, cool mom Dina Lohan. "Cumberland County's Community Newspaper"
