An old Grandfather said to his grandson, who came to him with anger at a friend who had done him an injustice, "Let me tell you a story... I too, at times, have felt a great hate for those that have taken so much, with no sorrow for what they do. But hate wears you down, and does not hurt your enemy. It is like tak- ing poison and wishing your enemy would die. I have struggled with these feelings many times." He continued, "It is as if there are two wolves inside me. One is good and does no harm. He lives in harmony with all around him, and does not take offense when no offense was intended. He will only fi ght when it is right to do so, and in the right way. But the other wolf, ah! He is full of anger. The littlest thing will set him into a fi t of temper. He fi ghts every- one, all the time, for no reason. He cannot think because his anger and hate are so great. It is helpless anger, for his anger will change nothing. Sometimes, it is hard to live with these two wolves inside me, for both of them try to dominate my spirit." The boy looked intently into his Grandfather's eyes and asked, "Which one wins, Grandfather?" The Grandfather smiled and qui- etly said, "The one I feed." The phrase, "Attitude of Gratitude" is often heard in many circles in our society. We live a society that focuses on materialism and individuality. By comparing ourselves to others and focusing on what we lack we experi- ence an attitude of greed and envy. Science shows that that people who keep a gratitude journal report having more energy, improved mood, more life satisfaction, and are more supportive to others. Having gratitude helps us focus on the good things we have, and not on what we lack. Some folks like to focus on the negative and how bad things are. Others work on fi nding solutions, giving their time and talents to help those in the community. The power of our community to come together and support each other is what makes Quartzsite amazing! Our churches share their generosity, our volunteers donate hundreds of hours to local organiza- tions, our elders share their wisdom, and our youth express their enthusi- asm; so much to be grateful for... The question remains, which wolf are we going to feed? Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as you ever can.
