George W. "Buck" Conner November 22, 1880 – February 4, 1947) He was an assistant director, director, story writer and actor. He appeared in approximately 85 films, including the Plainsman in 1936 starring Gary Cooper. The son of William L Conner and Leah Bowen, Buck was born in Streator, La Salle County, Illinois, is buried in Hi Jolly Cemetery in Quartzsite, AZ. As one of the earliest movie cowboys, he counted among his closest friends Will Rodgers and cowboy art- ist Charles Russell. Buck adopted the stage name of Buck Connors and authored books under the name Buck Connor. He served in both the Army and Navy during the Spanish American War of 1898, and while in the Navy, he was recommended for the Congressional Medal Of Honor for saving the lives of three shipmates during a shipboard fire. He did not, however, receive the medal because his heroic actions did not take place during actual combat. After the Spanish American War Buck joined the famous Buffalo Bill Wild West Show as a performer. Buck Stayed with the show for several years and became the Manager for all the Indians who performed in the show. He became a close friend of Buffalo Bill, so much so that Cody would write to him affectionately as "one of the old guard" even years after Buck left the show. Buck served as a Texas Ranger for over two years. After he left the Texas Rangers, he was assigned by one of the first motion picture companies from St. Louis, MO. to go south of the border and take movies of the fighting during the Mexican Revolution in the early 1910's and ended up fighting in the revolution instead of merely taking motion pictures of it. When he died of a heart attack in Yuma, AZ, Buck was still active in the mov- ies and was even carrying a Yuma County Deputy Sheriff's I.D. card and badge and the six-shooter that he had worn throughout his various careers.
