Life-size silhouettes of the eight people - men, women and a child - who died as a result of domestic violence in Cumberland County between Sept. 9, 2017, and Sept. 8, 2018. D o m e s t i c V i o l e n c e V i g i l I t was a somber occasion on the steps of the Cumberland County Courthouse Oct. 18 when the "Remember My Name" candlelight vigil was held to remember victims of domestic violence homicides and to raise awareness about domestic violence. e names of 60 people who died as a result of domestic violence in the state from Sept. 9, 2017, through Sept. 8, 2018, were read aloud. Eight of the victims were from Cumberland County. A white dove was released for the name of each Cumberland County victim. Remember My Name was presented by Cumberland County Family Court, the CARE Center Family Violence Program, Rape Crisis of Cumberland County, Army Community Services, the Cumberland County Sheriff 's Office, Legal Aid of North Carolina, Fayetteville Police Department and the Hope Mills Police Department. C umberland County Animal Control received 10,000 doses of dog vaccines and 6,300 doses of cat vaccines from the charitable organization GreaterGood. org, in partnership with Elanco Animal Health. e organizations donated the vaccines to areas affected by Hurricane Florence. Animal Control received the donated vaccines Sept. 20 and shared them with shelters in 13 other counties. Animal Control Director Elaine Smith said the combined 16,300 vaccines were more than the animal shelter could use, and Cumberland County shared the vaccines with Bladen, Carteret, Craven, Duplin, Hoke, Johnston, Moore, Nash, Pamlico, Pitt, Robeson, Sampson and Wake counties, as well as local rescue groups and animal welfare organizations.
