OCTOBER 31-NOVEMBER 6, 2018 UCW 31 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE NEWS OF THE WEIRD by the Editors at Andrews McMeel Syndication Just kidding An alert (or nosy) passerby called police on Oct. 10 after seeing staff through the window of a Natwest bank in Birmingham, England, hiding and cowering under their desks. Officers arrived at the bank in hopes of catching a robber red-handed, but instead were told the workers were participating in a team-building game of hide-and-seek. West Midlands Police Chief Inspector Dave Keen tweeted that, although the incident was a misunderstanding, the citizen made "the right call," reported Metro News. [Metro News, 10/10/2018] Smooth reaction On Oct. 12, an Air India Express pi- lot guided a Boeing 737 up and away from Tiruchirappalli International Airport in Tamil Nadu, India – but not ENOUGH up and away. As the plane took off shortly after midnight, it hit the top of a 5-foot-tall perimeter wall and destroyed a small landing guide tower. e Washington Post reported that, despite the audible collision, the pilot told the airport director the plane's systems were functioning normally and he was continuing toward Dubai, across the Indian Ocean. "But we found some parts of the plane, like an antenna, on the ground," the director said. Finally, about two hours into the flight, ground control convinced the pilot to return to India, where the plane landed in Mumbai. Indeed, there was a huge gash in the plane's underbelly, and mesh fencing was wrapped around the land- ing gear. All 130 passengers arrived unharmed and were booked on other flights, and the pilot and co-pilot have been grounded pending a review. [e Washington Post, 10/13/2018] Compelling explanations Yury Zhokhov, 41, a factory worker in Donetsk, Russia, was found kneel- ing in a field in early October with a knife handle sticking out of the top of his head. Zhokhov was conscious, and when questioned by police, he revealed he had stuck the 8-inch blade in him- self. He was having trouble breathing through his nose, he explained, and hoped to make another hole he could breathe through. But the knife be- came stuck, and he couldn't remove it. Odditycentral.com reports doctors at the local hospital were afraid to touch the knife for fear of killing Zhokhov or causing brain damage. "It was hor- rific," a hospital spokesperson told local media. X-rays showed the blade "exactly between the two hemispheres of the brain." Specialists were called and Zhokhov survived the surgery without apparent brain damage, although sur- geons are concerned about infection. Opinion? – Unsigned Matt Roush: My opinion on whether Fox will keep "9-1-1" around for a while? Yes, it's a keeper. My opinion on the show? When it focuses on the crisis of the week, it can be riveting, especial- ly in the recent earthquake two-parter, which was very impressively produced. When the story shifts to the characters' personal interactions, it's a lot less inspired, but no more or less than oth- ers in the current surplus of medical/ firefighter/police melodramas. Question: is is just a note of thanks for your review of "Poldark." We love this show, and I especially enjoyed see- ing the original Poldark, Robin Ellis, in this new version. e acting, cinematog- raphy and music are all excellent. – Gwen Matt Roush: You're welcome. at show is such a treat, and there's one more season before it's over! is gives me a chance to plug the delightful "e Durrells in Corfu" as well, now in its third season and another great addi- tion to PBS' Sunday lineup of British imports. (Keeley Hawes, who plays the Durrell mother, can be seen in a much more serious role on Netflix's gripping "Bodyguard." Consider that a recom- mendation.) To submit questions to TV Critic Matt Roush, go to: tvinsider.com by Damian Holbrook Cheers to "Supergirl" for getting more grounded. As fun as last season was, all the space witches and Worldkill- ers kept Kara (Melissa Benoist) stuck in sci-fi stories. Now that she's back at work as a reporter and fighting anti- alien Earthlings, the show feels as if it has found its groove – and very human heart – again. Jeers to "e Alec Baldwin Show" for playing it safe. For a guy who's nev- er been afraid to speak (or tweet!) his mind, Baldwin's eponymous interview show is frustratingly restrained. More Jack Donaghy, less Dick Cavett, please. "Cumberland County's Community Newspaper"
