Quartzsite Police Department will once again take part in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on Saturday, October 27th from 10am-2pm. The purpose of this National Take Back Day is to provide a venue for persons who want to dispose of unwanted and unused pre- scription drugs. These events are a huge success in removing potentially dangerous prescription drugs, particularly controlled substances, from our nation's medicine cabinets. There were ap- proximately 3,000 state and local law enforce- ment agencies throughout the nation that par- ticipated in past events. If you don't properly dispose of the unused or expired prescription drugs in your home, they might fi nd a new one. Unused or expired pre- scription medications are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse. Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dan- gerous as street drugs when taken without a pre- scription or a doctor's supervision. The non-medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America. The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends- and the home medicine cabinet. Unused prescription drugs thrown in the trash can be retrieved and abused or illegally sold. Unused drugs that are fl ushed contami- nate the water supply. Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment. Take-back programs are the best way to dispose of old drugs. This upcoming event will take place, Saturday, April 27th, 10am – 2 pm, at the Quartzsite Police Department, 305 N. Plymouth Ave. For more de- tails call the station at 928-927-4644.
