SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY • OKLAHOMA STATE UNIVERSITY • FALL 2018 Inside • Give in Support of Gamma Delta Scholarships ~ p. 2 • Upcoming Fall Semester Events ~ p. 3 • Welcome, New Members ~ p. 3 The Sig Scroll GAMMA DELTA ACQUIRES NEW PROPERTY Support from Alumni Solidifies Bright Future 2 018 has been quite a year for the Gamma Delta Chapter, both for the undergraduates and alumni. The undergraduates continue to represent all of us well, as they recently won yet another Peterson Significant Chapter Award. This is a great accomplishment that has become routine, but we must remind ourselves how big of a deal it is and the work it takes to earn the award. The men conducted another successful round of recruitment this summer and we are looking forward to welcoming the new class into the Chapter. The alumni leadership has been active as well. After months of planning and negotiation, the House Corporation purchased the old Pi Kappa Alpha house, which sits on our block to our southwest. This was a once-in-a-generation opportunity to acquire land that connects to our existing footprint, and gives us many different options going forward. Our existing structure is almost 40 years old, and is essentially residential construction (that has seen some pretty hard living over those 40 years). At some point, it will be time to build a new house that will last 75-100 years, and this additional property will give us flexibility in that endeavor. In the meantime, we will be leasing the new property to other Greek organizations while they remodel their own houses. For the coming school year, we are leasing to Beta Theta Pi, and already have interest from other chapters for the coming years. Special thanks to brother Jay Helm '70, as he was instrumental in getting the deal off the ground and negotiating the purchase. Additionally, please help me thank the following brothers for giving their input on the process and for generously assisting with the cost: Jack Allen '93, John Clerico '63, Jay Helm '70, Ken Klein '65, Jim Kuykendall '87, Greg Massey '87, and Joe Porter '64 Finally, we'd like to congratulate brother Norry Sims '66 on being awarded the Gamma Delta Award of Merit at the annual Sigma Chi Classic golf tournament this summer. This is the highest honor bestowed by the Gamma Delta Chapter to those who have given extraordinary service to the Chapter. We look forward to seeing you at the Gamma Delta football tailgates this fall. In hoc, Whit Culver '01 President Gamma Delta House Corporation Whit_culver@ml.com W e have an amazing group of brothers, bound by the blue and gold of the white cross, and driven by the precepts of the Jordan Standard. There's no better example of this than the generosity of ΓΔ brothers and their families to fund endowed scholarship awards to worthy undergraduate brothers. HISTORY OF THE FUND ΓΔ is fortunate to be a Thomas Cowan Bell Chapter within the National Fraternity. This provides funding for at least three annual scholarships from our National Sigma Chi Foundation. Constantine Sig Joe Porter '64 felt that ΓΔ should do more. In 2015, he created the Sigma Chi Endowed Scholarship at the OSU Foundation with a lead gift of $50,000. Soon thereafter, five other brothers matched the Porter gift: John Clerico '63, Jay Helm '70, Jimmy Kuykendall '87, Greg Massey '87, and Randall White '63. These gifts have encouraged many others to make tax-deductible gifts to our scholarship endowment. This fund has a current balance of approximately $450,000. SCHOLARSHIP AWARDS AT ALL-TIME HIGH According to Dr. Ken Case '66, retiring chairman of our scholarship committee, "In April, the ΓΔ Chapter of ΣΧ completed the scholarship awards for the 2018-2019 academic year. We awarded 18 scholarships to 16 active brothers, totaling $29,150." You can hear from three of these men on page 2. The selection committee is chaired by brother Bill Armstrong '63, who is succeeding Dr. Case as scholarship committee chair. Participating alumni brothers include Brett Allred '98, Scott Jones '76, Steve Maison '69, Joe Porter '64, Ken Stout '69, Brian Watson '02, and Kyle White '07. Brother Armstrong noted that the "committee works with the OSU Financial Aid office to determine if any of the applicants have filed the qualifying paperwork to establish financial need, which is a factor when making our awards." Scholarship recipients are Andrew Steed '18, Zack Tillotson '18, Conner Blatt '19, Jake Dunlap '19, Garrett Griggs '19, William Henderson '19, Irwin Karsten '19, Seth Morris Jackson '19, Jake Jeffries '19, Jared Kuykendall '19, Weston Kuykendall '19, Brady McClendon '19, Alex Moore '19, MacGregor Price '19, Tim Sakabu '19, and Nick Wilson '19. Dr. Case emphasized that we very proud of these brothers and the academic example they set for the Chapter. Sigma Chi Endowed Scholarship Fund Continues to Grow (Continued on page 2)
