AUGUST 1-7, 2018 UCW 25 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Pine Forest, Jack Britt host county football jamboree by EARL VAUGHAN JR. e BSN Sports Cumberland County Schools Football Jamboree is back for 2018 with a title sponsor and hopes of getting even bigger in the years to come. e two-night event features 24 teams this year. It will be held Wednes- day, Aug. 8, at Pine Forest High School, which has hosted the jamboree before, and ursday, Aug. 9, at a new host, Jack Britt High School. e full sched- ule of teams and scrimmages for this year's jamboree is listed in the far-right column of this article. Vernon Aldridge, student activities director for the county schools, is pleased with how the jamboree has grown in recent years, but he's hoping for more improvements. In addition to already feeding the teams and help- ing the visiting schools with their travel expenses, Aldridge hopes someday to offer scholarships to the competing teams to award to a player who ex- emplifies the best attributes of their school's program. To make that hap- pen, Aldridge said he'll continue to work to add sponsors for the event. Aldridge reminded spectators com- ing to the jamboree that they will not be watching a game. It's a controlled scrimmage where each team runs a set number of offensive plays before switching sides. Another feature of the jamboree is there will be two scrim- mages going on during each session with two teams on one side of the 50-yard-line and two on the other. Spectators who don't want to see the whole scrimmage but just want to watch their school need to arrive well in advance of their team's scheduled scrimmage to avoid missing the action. ere will be no advance sale of tickets this year, so all tickets must be purchased at the gate. Tickets are $10 for each night of the scrimmage.
