THE LAMBDA LETTER SUMMER 2018 ALUMNI NEWSLETTER OF THE LAMBDA CHAPTER OF SIGMA CHI INSIDE: 2 Alumnus Spotlight n 3 Lambda Chapter Update n 4 Welcome, New Members ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL YEAR FOR LAMBDA A s the summer months begin and we look forward to another school year in August, we are pleased to report a number of highlights from the past few months at Lambda. Our longtime house director, Cheryl Pate, was honored with the Edna A. Boss House Director Award. This award is bestowed by the Interna- tional Fraternity to recognize house directors who've made significant contributions to the lives of the undergraduate brothers in their chap- ters. This award is not given every year—it is only given when earned and was last given in 2008. It is a rare award, which testifies to just how special Cheryl truly is. Steve Moffett, M.D. '74 joined our Executive Committee in April. After a full career of medi- cal practice in Tennessee, Steve retired to Lake Monroe last year and reached out to us to get involved with the Chapter. Steve will be leading our scholarship committee and working with the undergraduate scholarship chairmen to enhance and recognize the Chapter's superior academic performance. The spring semester was quite challenging for the entire Greek system at IU, and we were no exception. As you may have read, all Greek organization activities on campus were com- pletely suspended for much of the semester. Our Chapter advisors, Phil Chambers '80 and An- sley Valentine, Delta Chi '90, spent countless hours working with our Executive Team and the University to manage through these challenges. Last year's undergraduate Executive Team, led by Consul Robby Abraham '19 and Pro Con- sul Patrick Shaffer '19, did a fantastic job and (Continued on page 4) Undergraduates and Alumni Maintain Chapter Excellence spent far more time on Lambda matters than they bargained for when they took on their offices. They all deserve our gratitude for jobs well done. We pledged an outstanding class of 13 spring new members. As a consequence of the spring suspension at IU, there wasn't enough time to complete their pledgeship and hold an initiation before school ended in May. As a result, they will move into the Chapter House in August as pledges and their initiation will be in September. We will also pledge a full class during the nor- mal fall recruitment schedule. The 2017-18 Annual Fund campaign built on the prior year's success by more than doubling the number of contributors. The list of the annual fund donors is on page 2. You'll see that partici- pation was broad, including brothers from the 1940s through the 2000s. We are truly grateful for your support. We are now starting the 2018- 19 campaign and encourage you to give back to Lambda. Please know that all contributions are used solely for capital improvements to the Chapter House. We just finished a complete re-roofing of the Chapter House. Thanks to Executive Committee member Bill Chambers '79, the entire cost of this $80,000 project was covered by insurance, as Bill was able to work with the roofing contrac- tor to demonstrate that the Chapter House had suffered hail damage over the years. We are in the midst of a variety of other sum- mer maintenance and repair projects. In addition to the re-roofing, most of the other work this summer is on the exterior of the Chapter House. We are repairing and sealing the parking lot; re- moving a couple of dead trees in the yard; and completing the replacement of the final 10 or so remaining old windows. We're also either going to power wash (if effective) or re-paint the white siding on the Chapter House. We refinanced the mortgage on the Chapter House at year-end 2017—just in time before interest rates started creeping up in 2018. As a result, our mortgage interest rate is quite low by Lambda Executive Committee Welcomes Steve Moffett, M.D. '74 Thank You, Chapter Advisors and 2017 Executive Team Chapter Welcomes 13 Spring New Members Lambda's Annual Fund Doubles Chapter House Receives New Roof Cheryl Pate Awarded Edna A.
