e Washington Alpha Delt 2 The Bond of Brotherhood Chris Clarke '89 Discusses Washington Chapter's Positive Impact I n the summer of 1985, I was headed to the University of Washington and already had a room set up in the resi- dence halls. ankfully, some of my friends from Newport High School came to me aer attending rush functions. ey told me I would love everything about the Greek system, and boy were they right. I made the most of rush, but the feeling I had on the sundeck at the Chapter house made the choice easy. e variety of brothers was amazing, but the common bond was apparent. Smart, happy, polite, honest, hardwork- ing, and entrepreneurial are just a few of the adjectives that come to mind when thinking about Alpha Delts back then and today. e consistent quality of men living and growing up in that building is truly impressive. As a pledge, I was lucky enough to be chosen by several upperclassmen as a roommate. One of my favorite memories was mid-October of my freshman year. I learned something new from my roommate, George Ghilarducci '87, every day. He sewed daily to make Halloween costumes for Alpha Delts and other people (mainly women) all over the Greek system. It still makes me chuckle today when I remember George sitting at his sewing machine with a work light and his visor, grinding away. In 2012, 27 years later, in a very similar way, my son, Tommy Clarke '16, signed his pledge card. e building was tired, but the Chapter had great new energy from the amazing reopening in 2008. Doug Self '08, the only member and recruitment chairman in 2008, made sure the Chapter house was back in operation. Tommy recognized the building needed serious work and became house manager. He followed this by serv- ing as house president the following year. He helped lead in securing the EO Blackman award in 2014. Hopefully, he and I will enjoy one another's company at future events at the Chapter house. I am lucky to still see my pledge brothers regularly, and a day rarely goes by where I do not interact with an Alpha Delt. e Seattle business community is filled with leaders from our Chapter, and is a great resource for young alumni. I am lucky to hear stories of men, like myself, helping Tommy's era as they look for employment. I look forward to continuing my connection with the Chapter and helping where I can. I hope to see even more alumni at all our upcoming events, includ- ing the 10-year anniversary of Washington Chapter's reopening next fall. Aer years as a Johansen/Princess cruise director (another '80s/'90s Al- pha Delt tradition), I was lucky to marry my Gamma Phi Beta sweetheart, Christina Crisera. She has given me four beautiful Huskies: Kelly, 25, at Amazon; Tommy, 23, at KPMG; Katy, a UW senior at Gamma Phi; and Kristin, a UW sophomore at Gamma Phi. I have worked at Platt Electric Supply for 20 years in sales. It allows me to have a ton of fun skiing, golfing (poorly), boating, sailgating, and anything else that sounds fun! Risk Challenges of Our Time I t goes without saying, that the Greek system nationally is facing se- rious challenges with reports of poor behavior and, in a few cases, deaths. However, we at Alpha Delta Phi are committed to ensuring the well-being of our pledges, brothers, and guests. Ever since our Chapter's reestablishment in 2008, we have been committed to the University's guidelines, as well as the standards that we have set for ourselves. In the past year, we have collaboratively craed a new risk management policy and procedures through the hard work of the Alumni Board and the Chapter's Undergraduate lead- ers. e Chapter has taken a leading role on campus to ensure the preservation and advancement of our Greek community through actively working with and support- ing this effort with other fraternities and sororities. is effort flows through our partnership with the University ad- ministration, active involvement and leadership in the Interfrater- nity Council, and drug and alcohol abuse counseling, and sexual as- sault prevention. Be assured that we remain dedicated to our fraternity's long-range adherence to the foster- ing and developing of the entire man intellectually and morally. We are in many ways the leaders of leaders, and take pride in working toward the safety and welfare of our entire community. Xaipe, Ramin Farrokhi '20 Risk Manager
