The Seattle Mariners got the power-bat they so desperately needed. Two foes in the AL West found a way to work together Wednesday when the Angels traded switchhitting slugger Kendrys Morales to the Seattle Mariners for left-hander Jason Vargas, filling needs for both teams. The 29-year-old Morales became expendable after the Angels agreed to a deal last week with free agent slugger Josh Hamilton. The Angels had been looking for a pitcher after losing Zack Greinke and Dan Haren to free agency and trading Ervin Santana. The Angels added a left-hander to their rotation, while Seattle got a hitter than can instantly take a spot in the middle of its order. We were going to try and come up with some type of offense and I think this worked out in a positive way, Seattle general manager Jack Zduriencik said. Both players are at the end of their contracts. Getting Vargas reunites the lefty with his former Long Beach State teammate Jered Weaver at the top of the Angels rotation. The duo played college ball together in 2004 and now will be counted on in helping make the big money the Angels spent on Hamilton and Albert Pujols last season pay off. Vargas led Seattle in wins last season, going 14-11 with a 3.85 ERA and pitched a careerhigh 217 1-3 innings. The 29-year-old is 3642 with a 4.09 ERA in four years with the Mariners. Spartans end 5-game losing streak By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor The Red Bluff Spartans varsity basketball team ended a five-game losing streak Wednesday with a 5544 win over the Paradise Bobcats at home. Red Bluff (4-7) sank six 3s in the contest, four of which came from junior Austin Torres. Paradise (1-5) converted three 3-pointers. The Spartans were coming off a rough go at their Holiday Classic tournament, where they dropped their three games. Red Bluff ran to a 15-11 first-quarter lead, which prompted Paradise to switch from man to a 2-3 roaming defense. The Bobcats saw some success with the move, outscoring the Spartans 13- 12 to go to the half down 2724. But the Spartans came out hot in the third and out scored the Bobcats 11-5 to go up 38-29 with 5:29 left in the period. The Bobcats made a run to bring the score to 44-41 with 6:13 left in the fourth quarter, but would score just three more points the rest of the period. Spartans junior guard Matthew Fox scored four in the frame, Torres added three, and Curtis Twitchell and Lucas Burns both notched two down the Bobcats 55-44. Torres and Twitchell finished with 12 points a piece. Up next for the Spartans is a tournament in Oroville, which tips off Jan. 3. Paradises Presten Hardin led all scorers with 16. We dont have it; you have to expect it because he just stepped in. From gauging the zip on the ball after its release to learning the tendencies of the strong-armed Kaepernick and finding their timing together, Davis said he believes things will soon start clicking. ALAMEDA (AP) Oakland Raiders running back Mike Goodson is looking forward to playing in Carolina for the first time since being traded by the Panthers in the offseason. He just doesnt know what type of reception to expect. Goodson, who spent his first three NFL seasons with Carolina, still owns property there and routinely talks to some of his former teammates. Even Panthers coach Ron Rivera considers himself a fan of Goodsons and speaks glowingly about the 2009 fourth-round draft pick. Make no mistake, however. While he remains on friendly terms with his former club, Goodson definitely wants to make a point to the Panthers. Its a pretty big deal, Goodson said Wednesday. Thats my old team and where I used to be for so long. (They) know me and know of me. I want to beat them just as bad as I want to beat anybody else. While the scenery has changed, Goodsons role has remained pretty much the same in Oakland as it was in Carolina. He has been the primary backup behind Darren McFadden and has picked up additional reps returning kickoffs. McFadden has struggled adjusting to the zone blocking schemes the Raiders use, but Goodson has excelled in the few opportunities he has had. Goodsons 6.7 yards-per-carry average on only 30 carries is nearly twice that of McFaddens 3.4. He also has a higher receiving average than any other running back or tight end on Oaklands roster, and has the teams longest kickoff return this season. That is not surprising to Rivera, who saw Goodson have similar success in 2010 when he put together back-to-back 100-yard games after Carolina running backs DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart were hurt. Rivera backed the offseason trade that sent Goodson to the Raiders for offensive line prospect Bruce Campbell but remains fond of his former player. We have always liked Mike, Rivera said during a con- See 49ERS, page 2B See RAIDERS, page 2B MCT file photo San Francisco starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick throws earlier this month. 49ers Davis, Kaepernick still working on their chemistry SANTA CLARA (AP) Vernon Davis had a cross-country flight and an entire off day to think about the touchdown that should have been. Colin Kaepernick overthrew the tight end on a would-be 34-yard score during the first quarter of Sundays 41-34 victory at New England. Davis acknowledges he is still getting used to Kaepernick, who is 4-1 since becoming the starter in place of Alex Smith and earned NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after the upset of the Patriots. I get chills when I think about it, Davis said of the missed opportunities. One thing I learned in the beginning when I first got here, everyone was talking about being on the same page as the quarterback, as Alex Smith. You have to develop that chemistry, that bond so
