4A Daily News ��� Thursday, December 20, 2012 Pastimes & Arts entertainment Walter chosen Artist of the Month Celtic Christmas Red Bluff Art Association���s December Artist of the Month is Loyd Walter, an artist whose medium is wood. ���First seeing Loyd���s work during Red Bluff���s 2006 Art Walk, many of RBAA���s members admired his creativity and the absolute beauty of his craftsmanship,���said President Connie Maxey. ���It is quite an honor to share this fine artist with our community.��� Raised on the eastern slope of Washington���s Cascade Mountains, a country-ranch beginning helped Loyd Walter develop a sense of practicality and self-reliance. These qualities have served Loyd well throughout his life. Loyd attended the University of Washington, then two years in the Army, stationed in Alaska. In 1957 Loyd moved to San Jose, California to finish his education. There he married, raised four children and became an aerospace designer and technology instructor. In 1977 Loyd returned to Alaska with three sons to work for the State. Ten years later Loyd returned to teaching and filled an opening at Shasta College in Redding, California, where he taught engineering and technology until retiring in 2001. For more than 50 years wood-working has been part-time distraction for Loyd. However, since retiring this distraction has become a fulltime pursuit. Loyd is an active member in both the Shasta Woodworker���s Club and North Valley Art League. A new workshop and studio supports his woodworking activities. Most of Loyd���s wood turning is oriented to art and display rather than function. This orientation leads to natural and bark edge work. This is especially true for his manzanita burl pieces. coming to Redding Loyd works mostly with found wood. Here the challenge is to realize the shape and design that will bring out the natural beauty of the grain and structure. Each piece is a unique creation that evolves during the turning and a bit of the soul is revealed. Such turnings tend to be sensual to the touch, as well as handsome to view. It is said, ���A wood-turner���s touch is as critical for feedback as is sight.��� At one count Loyd has worked with over thirty varieties of wood. He often finds the richer and more interesting the species of wood, the more difficult it is to work. This element adds to the challenge and continual search for new techniques in turning. ���The enjoyment, challenge and fascination I get from wood-working is derived from the characteristics and beauty of the wood itself,��� Loyd said. ���Wood, with its infinite variations of grain, texture and color gives me the potential to create pieces of interest and grace.��� Loyd has displayed his art for sale in several galleries, including North West Fine Woodwork in Seattle, Gallery M in Half Moon Bay, and Highlight Gallery in Mendocino, Skyline Gallery in Tuscan and the Denise Oliver Gallery in Harrison, Idaho on Lake Coeur d'Alene. In June of 2008 Loyd was a featured artist at the Carter House Gallery in Redding and has a show scheduled in Idaho in 2014. Loyd also sells his wood turnings online; his wife Barbara maintains his website and online Etsy store. In 2006, Yosh Sugiyama, nationally recognized artist advised Loyd to enter juried shows. Acting on his counsel, Loyd has been accepted in a number of shows. In 2006, Loyd took First, Fourth, Fifth, an Honorable Mention and ���Best of Division��� in the California State Fair. Every year Loyd participates in the Annual International Design in Wood Competition in San Diego and most every year he is awarded at least one honor in his division. Loyd continues to focus on entering competitions. He feels the work and creativity are the motive and pleasure of his wood pieces, but juried competitions add an extra discipline and challenge to his art. Loyd has an open door policy in his shop, as much as he enjoys his craft he gets great satisfaction in sharing his skills, knowledge and expertise with others, especially young people. Currently he is helping Audrey, a 21-year old neighbor build a table from salvaged wood and this past summer he helped a 14-year old build a chicken coop for her Future Farmer���s project. In November, through the Shasta Woodworker���s Club, he and his 15-year old grandson built 60 wooden helicopters, baby cradles and stick horses for Toys for Tots. Loyd truly believes it is his responsibility and duty to inspire and teach young people to become more interested in the art of woodworking and carrying on the heritage of fine wood craftsmanship. A favorite State of Jefferson holiday tradition returns to the Cascade Theatre stage as Jefferson Public Radio presents Tom��seen Foley���s A Celtic Christmas at 7:30 p.m. on Dec. 21. This year���s program features all new stories, music and dances that celebrate Irish culture and the giving spirit of the Christmas season in a show designed to delight young and old. With a world-class ensemble of performers, from both sides of the Atlantic, Tom��seen Foley���s A Celtic Christmas recreates the joy and innocence of a night before Christmas in a farmhouse in the remote parish of Teampall an Ghleanntain in the west of Ireland, when the neighbors gather around the fire to grace the long wintry night with the laughter of their stories, the joy of their music, and dances they always said they were much too old for. Tom��seen Foley���s A Celtic Christmas features Marcus Donnelly from Co. Galway, one of the most exhilarating, truly creative Irish dancers performing today. Internationally acclaimed master of the steelstring guitar William Coulter joins in, along with vocalist, multi-instrumentalist and world-champion level Irish dancer Marianne Knight from Co. Mayo, and Brian Bigley, also a world-champion level Irish dancer, on uilleann pipes, whistles and flute. Shasta College opera workshop to perform Shasta College���s Division of Arts, Communications and Social Sciences presents an English-language performance of the tragic opera "Cavalleria Rusticana" by Mascagni. In this one-act opera, a love triangle breaks the codes of Sicilian honor and ends in the death of young Turiddu. The evening continues with a scene from Mozart���s delightful comedy "Cosi fan Tutte" which sets two pairs of lovers against a wily rou�� and a scheming maid. The concert concludes with a scene from Gounod���s great opera, "Faust" in which Faust makes a deal with the devil to win the hand of the lovely Margarite. Performances will take place in the Shasta College theatre at 7 p.m. on Jan. 31, Feb. 1 and 2 with one matinee at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 3.
