14 U ntil now, campaign updates have focused mainly on the building and the critical need to renovate the Old Gal. Today the focus is on the people, the outstanding under- graduate and alumni brothers of Mu Chapter of Alpha Sigma Phi at the University of Washington. The quality of the current undergraduate men at Mu Chapter is remarkable. In recent years, the applicants for the annual Found- ers' Day scholarship awards have impressed us with their high academic achievements and ambitious goals. They have cumu- lative GPAs as high as 3.83 while pursuing degrees in business, engineering, architecture, pre-med, and pre-law. The applicants' majors include Finance & Computer Science, Civil Engineering with Naval ROTC, Molecular, Cellular and Developmental Biolo- gy, and Entrepreneurship & Marketing. The quality of men at Mu Chapter is not just a recent phenome- non. Throughout the 106 years since Mu was founded there have been alumni that have accomplished extraordinary things in their lives and careers. A few have been highlighted in recent Musings, such as Charlie Conner, Mark Still, Jeff Roe and Mark Kroese. Here are just a few more of our exceptional brothers: • Phil Johnson, '14, served as president of Boeing, United Airlines and Kenworth. An engineering chair at the UW was named in his honor in 1990. • Al Ulbrickson, '23, coached the UW Men's Crew from 1927 to 1958, including the team that won the gold med- al at the 1936 Olympics featured in the best-selling book The Boys in the Boat. • Thor Tollefson, '25, member of the US House of Repre- sentatives from Washington's 6 th District from 1947 to 1965 • Robert T. Hunter, '28, served on the Washington State Supreme Court from 1957 to 1977 and was chief justice in 1969 and 1970. • Dr. William B. Hutchinson, '29, founded the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in honor of his younger brother and baseball great Fred Hutchinson, '39. • Bob Houbregs, '50, college and NBA basketball player that was named NCAA Player of the Year in 1953 and lead the University of Washington to the Final Four. General Manager of the Seattle Supersonics 1970-1973. • Arthur W. Buerk '56, co-founder of Shurgard Storage and Montlake Capital. Namesake of the Buerk Center for Entrepreneurship at the UW Foster School of Busi- ness. • John Koenig, '79, former US ambassador to Cyprus, now a lecturer at the UW Jackson School of International Studies. • Michael Klebeck, '85, founder of Top Pot Doughnuts and Sun Liquor. • Steve Anderson, '87, founder and partner of one-man firm Baseline Ventures, the first seed investor in Insta- gram and an early investor of Twitter. Named to Forbes Midas List of Top Tech Investors. These fine men are part of our history at Mu Chapter. With your help we will be able to continue this legacy. The campaign to renovate the Old Gal has raised $952,370 so far through the gen- erous gifts and pledges of 111 donors. If you haven't joined the campaign yet, please don't wait any longer.
