Zeta Psi Chapter 2 U pon his arrival at the University of Cincin- nati, Stephen McNamee '64 was recruited by Bill Graves '61, a member of the foot- ball team, and invited to the Sigma Chi chapter house. Impressed by the individuals he met and the Sigma Chi ideals of friendship, justice, and learning, Stephen knew Zeta Psi was where he needed to be. "As time went on, I became famil- iar with the history and values, and those have served as excellent guideposts that I still carry with me," he shared. As a liberal arts major, Stephen naturally grav- itated toward law and has worked his way up to the position he has today as a Senior United States District Judge. He was encouraged to go into the legal profession by his brother-in-law, who was a practicing attorney at the time, as well as others he met during his college years. One of the most rewarding parts of his position has been the feeling of contributing to the betterment of society. "Serving in the judicial system has al- lowed me to utilize my intellectual development and knowledge of the law to address issues prev- alent in society," he explained. "My goal is to do that in a fair and just manner." His prominent career in the justice system has brought Stephen many honors, including his recognition as a Distinguished Alumnus of Mc- Micken College of Arts and Sciences at the Uni- versity of Cincinnati in 2003, the Arizona State Bar James A. Walsh Outstanding Jurist Award in 2006, and Distinguished Citizen Award from the University of Arizona in 2009. en, in 2014, Stephen was inducted into the Maricopa County Bar Association Hall of Honor. Still active as an alumnus, he has a renewed spirit in the values and rituals of the Norman Shield. "It's about living those values every day through- out life's journey, not just while you're in college," Stephen recalled. Sigma Chi is truly unique in its dedication to the discipline of carrying out its ideals. Stephen is grateful to his brothers, om- as Rainey '62 and Stan Moskey '61, who gave him that guidance and helped keep him on the right track while in college. Although he stress- es to active members to adhere to the values and have a universal pursuit of attaining life goals, he also advises to take time to enjoy the life you have. "Have a sense of humor, and don't take yourself so seriously." rough Sigma Chi, Stephen has made lifelong, endearing friends. A few, Gus Schmidt '62, Lau- ren Hill '65, Fred Scott '64, and the late Ken Lloyd '61, he has remained close to over the years. eir shared memories and bonds have stood the test of time, as only brothers can. Hav- ing been a member in both Zeta Psi and Beta Phi chapters of Sigma Chi, Stephen was able to expe- rience two different cultures of the fraternity. He looks up to brothers in both chapters who have been tremendous mentors along the way. Stephen has been married for 40 years, and his daughter, Maureen, is married to a dentist who is a Phi Delt. He enjoys playing golf when he can, but most of his time is spent related to his legal and volunteer efforts. Not only is he a Significant Sig, but a member of the Order of Constantine, a Life Loyal Sig, and was inducted into the 150 Hall of Fame as a Sigma Chi alumnus. Even as accom- plished as he is, Stephen never envisioned the life he's had, and is most blessed for that. You can connect with Stephen at stephen_ mcnamee@azd.uscourts.gov.
