Think Back. Think Big. Think Beta.
While the campaign to raise funds will continue, the next step is the
demolition of the Beta House at 1207 and beginning construction. Those
having been through a construction project of this size will attest that there
is a seemingly unlimited number of tasks and decisions to be made to keep
the project moving forward on schedule. However, we are guided by the
capable and skilled alumnus Ron Ward '71, of Ward Construction as our
general contractor. Since the go-ahead decision was made, our impressive
property has been surveyed, contoured, examined, drilled, and prepped
and the architectural and structural drawings have been reviewed, revised,
and finalized. By the time you are reading this, the construction drawings
will be out for bidding.
For 79 years Gamma Lambda
Betas have entered and exited
the doors of the Beta House at
1207; you and I are among them.
Some time on May 11, 2018, in an
uncelebrated moment and probably
with little idea of the significance,
the last Gamma Lambda Beta will
exit as a college student through
the doors of 1207 when the Spring
Semester of 2018 comes to a close.
At that moment, the fate of the
Beta House will be sealed and we
will be left with only memories
in the shadows of history as a 79 year legacy comes to a close only to be
reborn again.
On May 12, 2018, the furnishings of 1207 will be moved to the Gamma
Lambda Beta's temporary location in the old Pike house located southeast
from the backdoor of the Beta House. The old Pike house, a pawn in the
Pike's move to acquire their new location at University and Monroe, was
traded to the OSU Foundation and then discarded to the University. In
disrepair and neglected, the old Pike house was purchased by a group
of Sigma Chi's and leased to the Beta Theta Pi Building Corporation
to serve as a temporary partial home for the Gamma Lambda Chapter
pending completion of the New Beta House. During construction half of
the Chapter will reside in 1215, the Beta Annex/Old Acacia house and half
in the old Pike house.
It Is Time! Late in the week of May 14th, following remediation of
asbestos at 1207, the bull dozers and wrecking ball will begin what time
and many challenges have failed to do…bring down the Beta House.
As time draws closer, an email will go out to advise of the time that
demolition will begin for those wishing to watch as the Beta House/The
Big Red Island fades into history.
Now in 2018, the 95th year since
Delta Sigma became the Gamma
Lambda Chapter of Beta Theta
Pi… It Is Time to build the third
Beta House at Oklahoma State
University. As I will strive to
remind you, this project has been
the result of the efforts of many
who continue to give their time
and treasure. No singular brother
deserves credit, but many deserve
a pat on the back. On these pages
you will see the lists of those
on the Building Corporation, the
Capital Campaign Committee and
the Donors; as you see them, give them a heartfelt thank you. For without
each of them, a New Beta House would not be possible.
Over the next 18 months we will work to keep you updated as the project
continues.
To be continued…
Yours in _kai_,
Greggory T. Colpitts '88
