April 22 - 28, 2018 WHATS UP! T5 BY ANDREW WARREN TV Media Cubist intelligence: When it comes to geniuses, National Geographic wants us to re- member that it isn't just great scientists who deserve that dis- tinction: some of history's greatest artists were also ge- niuses in their own rights. The first season of "Genius" peeled back the shroud and peered into the life of one of the 20th century's greatest think- ers: Albert Einstein, played by both Geoffrey Rush ("The King's Speech," 2010) and John- ny Flynn ("Vanity Fair") at the various stages of his storied life. The second season pre- mieres Tuesday, April 24, with a new cast and a new focus on another one of the 20th centu- ry's greatest minds. Antonio Banderas stars as legendary artist Pablo Picasso in the new season-long telling of his life's story. The Spanish actor is no stranger to audienc- es on this side of the Atlantic, having starred in many big Hol- lywood flicks, including "Evita" (1996), "The Mask of Zorro" (1998), "The 13th Warrior" (1999) and "Spy Kids" (2001). There's a personal connec- tion for the actor, too. Both he and Picasso were born in the city of Málaga on Spain's south- ern coast, although the artist only lived there for a short time. "The life story of Pablo Picasso has long since fascinat- ed me, and I have so much re- spect for this man, who also comes from my birthplace, Málaga," Banderas said when his casting was announced. "Antonio was the natural choice. He, like Picasso, has a no-holds-barred approach to life that will add to the genuine- ness that we're looking for," added executive producer Ron Howard ("Arrested Develop- ment"). Einstein may be the proto- typical genius in many people's minds, but a man like Pablo Pi- casso was a genius in his own field. Watch Antonio Banderas transform into the legendary painter in season 2 of "Genius," premiering Tuesday, April 23, on National Geographic. Danger! Danger!: It seems that "Archer" is sticking to its guns. After several seasons of gradually moving away from the entire setting on which it was built — that of a Cold War- esque private spy agency ripped straight from some of the more ludicrous parts of James Bond movies — the FXX animated series threw that all out the window last season, and it seems that it's doing the same for season 9. The new season, subtitled "Danger Island," premieres Wednesday, April 25, and finds the show's namesake Sterling Archer (voiced by H. Jon Benja- min, "Bob's Burgers") working as an alcoholic seaplane pilot living in the South Pacific. That's a far cry from the character's original role as a deadly spy and ruthless assas- sin, but all of the action, ro- mance and laughs are definitely still a part of the show. All of the characters that au- diences have come to know and love are still here, too. Archer's overbearing mother, Malory Archer (Jessica Walter, "Arrest- ed Development"), Cheryl Tunt (Judy Greer, "Jurassic World," 2015), Cyril Figgis (Chris Parnell, "30 Rock"), Lana Kane (Aisha Tyler, "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"), Ray Gillette (Adam Reed, "Frisky Dingo") and Dr. Krieger (Lucky Yates, "The Adventures of Elmo in Grouchland," 1999) are all back, although not nec- essarily in the roles — or even with the same names — as they've had in the past. While the change has been gradual, it seems that "Archer" has fully transformed from the procedural, mission-of-the- week format that its earlier sea- sons had into an animated an- thology with the same charac- ters in different roles. It's cer- tainly one way to keep a long- running series feeling fresh, and "Danger Island" is trying out something that the previ- ous seasons have not. The new season of "Archer" premieres Wednesday, April 25, on FXX. Stick with Kidman: It's an important lesson in show busi- ness — or in any business, for that matter: if you have a win- ning combination, stick with it. That's what HBO's doing with some of the talent behind last year's "Big Little Lies," which earned an incredible 16 Emmy nominations, and won eight. The premium channel has given a straight-to-series order to "The Undoing," a new limit- ed series based on the novel "You Should Have Known" by Jean Hanff Korelitz. "Big Little Lies" and big-screen star Ni- cole Kidman has signed on to star in the new series, reuniting with "Big Little Lies" executive producer Bruna Papandrea and writer David E. Kelley, both of whom are sticking to those roles for the new series. "The Undoing" will star Kid- man as a successful profession- al living the life that she's al- ways wanted. Everything is perfect with a career that she loves, a happy son and a doting husband, until a violent death throws everything into disarray and forces her to confront the reality of her relationships. The psychological thriller is still early in its planning stages, with no other casting an- nouncements or even a release date made public, but with the team behind "Big Little Lies," HBO is clearly hoping that lightning can strike twice.
