It might be a veritable veteran voice on the sidelines in Lily Brose. Or it might be that they just dont know any better. Regardless, the Red Bluff Lady Spartans varsity basketball team has opened its season 3-0, which includes a tournament win in Anderson on Saturday after a thrilling 51-48 victory over the host Cubs. In Kathy Brandts last four years coaching the Spartans, its the first time Red Bluff has won a preseason tournament, she said. And it marks another step toward the programs turnaround from the 5-19 doldrums two years ago. Ask the juniors on the team, Brandt said, and they might know the Spartans history, but they havent lived it, which can be beneficial. After ridding themselves of their opening night jitters in an ugly win against Trinity on Thursday, the Spartans played well in a win against league rival West Valley on Friday to earn a spot in the Tip-Off Classic championship game against Anderson. In the past, reaching the final might have been good enough. Not this season. If youre in it, you should be in it to win it, Brandt said. Not to go home with second place. But the Spartans, going into halftime on Saturday, found themselves in a 25-16 hole and were held to just six points in the second period. Brandt had a prescription to break through Andersons 1-3-1 defense that was giving Red Bluff fits in the first half, but needed the extended break to explain it to her team. She added that she challenged her squad at the half. This early in the season with a new team, you never know how theyre going to respond, Brandt said. The Lady Spartans heeded her call and played with added defensive energy, trapping Anderson in the backcourt and forcing turnovers. On offense, the team exploded for 19 points while keeping the Cubs to eight in the period and entered the fourth with a 35-33 advantage. The back-and-forth fourth period saw big plays, including a Brittany Clatty 15-foot jumper to take a 47-45 lead with 1:30 left in the game. After Anderson crept back to trail 48-47 with 23 seconds left with Red Bluff inbounding, the Cubs coach told his team during a timeout to keep the ball away from the Spartans Daisy Brose, who had the hot free throw hand in the game, making 9 of 10 up to that point. Anderson failed to steal the ball on the Spartans inbound play, and also failed to keep the ball from Broses possession. The Cubs were forced to put Brose on the line, where she calmly drained two to give Red Bluff a 50-47 advantage. The Cubs missed a three-pointer to tie the game and the Spartans would seal their tournament win. Brose finished with 17 points and 9 rebounds and was awarded tournament MVP. Jessica Macdonald added 6 points, and Chelsey Bushnell finished with 7 points and 6 boards. Macdonald and Bushnell both took home All-Tournament honors. The Lady Spartans next tournament is the Red Bluff Holiday Classic. That was their comment (after the game), Brandt said. Our next tournament is the Holiday Classic, and, you know, lets get it done there. Lois Langford Tournament Corning and Mercy spent the weekend Daily News photo by Andre Byik Red Bluff High's Chelsey Bushnell rises for a jumper against Anderson during the Tip-Off Classic championship game at Anderson High School on Saturday. at the Lois Langford Tournament in Live Oak. San Francisco and freeagent center fielder Angel Pagan agreed to a $40 million, four-year contract Monday as the winter meetings got underway in Nashville, Tenn. Bobby Evans, the teams vice president of baseball operations, said the deal with Pagan was very close and the leadoff hitter would be subject to a physical to finalize his return to the reigning World Series champions. Retaining Pagan was among the top priorities for Sabean this offseason, along with keeping recently re-signed left-handed reliever Jeremy Affeldt and Marco Scutaro. Bulldogs fall in Block LM championship By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor LOS MOLINOS The Los Molinos Bulldogs varsity basketball team found themselves fighting uphill for most its Block LM Tournament championship game against Hamilton on Saturday. The young and scrappy Bulldogs fell 43-35, but showed flashes of its emerging identity as a defensiveminded team. After falling behind 27-20 going into halftime, the Bulldogs (2-1) staged a remarkable third period when they held Hamilton (3-0) to just three points. Hamiltons 6-foot-3 Jospeh Bass and 6-foot-7 Andrew Whitsett were dominating the paint in the first half, cleaning up their teams outside misses for easy layups. But Bulldogs coach Christian Cumptson found success countering with a small lineup in the second half, which saw Los Molinos tie the game at 32 with 5:11 left in the fourth period. Its the closest the Bulldogs would get to a lead as Hamilton then built a nine-point, 4132 advantage with about a minute left to play. Cumptson said Hamiltons own adjustment to go small worked because their small guys are bigger than our small guys. Bulldogs point guard AJ Long, who struggled with his shot most of the night, did find creative ways to reach the basket and drove without fear. Long finished with 7 points and All-Tournament honors. The Bulldogs Jesus Castillo, who received All-Tournament honors as well, lit up the field with 11 points, which included three threepointers. Eric Haley added 4 points of his own. Cumptson said he thought his team played well in its opening tournament, which saw the Bulldogs win a tight, 42-41 contest against American Christian in the quarters Daily News photo by Andre Byik Los Molinos High's AJ long brings the ball up the court against Hamilton in the Block LM championship game Saturday at Los Molinos High School. and a less than close 58-38 victory over Esparto in the semifinals.
