Tuesday, December 4, 2012 Daily News 5A Corning parade beats weather Logue sworn in for third term Daily News photo by Chip Thompson The rains held off just long enough Saturday evening for Corning to ring in the holiday season with the annual Hometown Christmas Parade. The parade capped a day full of traditional Christmas activities. Hotties heat up for Branding Project SACRAMENTO Surrounded by family members and colleagues, Assemblyman Dan Logue, RMarysville, took the oath of office today to serve a third term in the California State Assembly. A small business owner for more than 30 years, Logue, who dedicated his energies last term working for regulatory relief and economic recovery, was cautious but optimistic towards the upcoming legislative session. Last year, Assembly Republicans introduced a credible pension reform plan and supported the Governors efforts to reward Logue Californians who transition from welfare to work, Logue said. More remains to be done to reign in our structural budget deficit, stop over spending and change our hostile regulatory environment. As vice-chairman of the Assembly Health Committee, Logue led the effort to enact legislation to eliminate obstacles in the law to using telehealth in the delivery of health care to rural California. These reforms are projected to save California taxpayers more than $1 billion annually. As chairman of the Republican Task Force on Jobs and Economic recovery, Logue has led the charge to improve California's business climate, fighting for job retention, reducing regulatory burdens, and working towards economic recovery for the Golden State. The easy decisions were made last year, Logue said. Real, serious challenges lay ahead. We still face a growing budget deficit, unfunded pension liabilities and a flagging state economy. The Legislature needs to make the difficult choices and directly confront these challenges. Last years State Parks debacle shows that government operations need greater scrutiny to ensure they are operating with efficiency and accountability. Logue represents the 3rd Assembly District in the California Legislature, which includes the counties of Butte, Tehama, Glenn, Colusa, Yuba and Sutter. Hospital receives A for patient safety Shasta Regional Medical Center was honored this week with an "A" Hospital Safety Score by The Leapfrog Group, an independent national nonprofit organization run by employers and other large purchasers of health benefits. The Leapfrog Group assigns letter grades from A to F to hospitals throughout the country for their safety. The annual safety scores are based on preventable medical errors, injuries, accidents and infections, and are compiled under the guidance of the nations leading experts on patient safety and are intended to empower patients with information to objectively evaluate local hospitals and make health care decisions for themselves and their families. This is the Leapfrog Groups second round of hospital safety ratings. The initial report, released in June 2012, also garnered Shasta Regional the top "A" rating. "Receiving this recognition for a second time shows that Shasta Regional remains committed to providing quality health care that is focused on patient safety," said Cyndy Gordon, Shasta Regionals Chief Nursing Officer. "Its at the core of everything we do." In its first effort in June, Leapfrog gave a break to hospitals nationwide with poor showings, giving them a "Grade Pending." This time, Leapfrog pulled out its red pen, giving 25 hospitals an "F." Another 122 hospitals got a "D." Leapfrog awarded 790 hospitals an "A," and 678 received a "B." Leapfrog gave 1,004 hospitals a "C." "Hospitals that earn an A have demonstrated their commitment to their patients and their community," said Leah Binder, president and CEO of the Leapfrog Group.
