2A Daily News Tuesday, December 4, 2012 Community people&events Holly Beaven You Matter Girl Scouts fundraiser The Rancho Tehama Girl Scouts troop 70441 will be hosting a Girl Scouts Fundraiser from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, at the Rancho Tehama Recreation Center, 17605 Rancho Tehama Road, in Corning. The Girl Scouts will sing Christmas carols while the public shops for baked goods, gently used books and toys. All proceeds will be provided to the Girl Scouts Troop 70441 to pay for upcoming events, badges, and troop needs. Neighborhood watch The community is invited to join the Richfield Neighborhood Watch "LIGHTS ON 2012" campaign by leaving a porch light on every Monday night in December to help local law enforcement. It is the wish of the group to extend its efforts beyond Tehama County to surrounding counties willing to participate. The campaign has proven to be effective in deterring criminal activity during the holiday season. The new year will be a celebration of 4 years of program success. Local author book signing Local historian and author Gene Serr will hold a book signing at the Book Barn 10 a.m. to noon Dec. 8 for his new book, Tales from Ishi Country. The Book Barn is at 619 Oak St., Red Bluff. Serr is editor and part author of the book, which consists of a collection of 30 articles about Ishi Country and what has happened there since about 1850. Some of the articles are new and some are reprints of material published in past issues of Memories, the annual publication of the Tehama County Genealogical and Historical Society. The cost of the book is $16, with all proceeds going to the society. Several of the articles are by the Maidu author, Beverly Benner Ogle. Ogle grew up in Mill Creek canyon and Paynes Creek, in Ishi Country, and has written two books, Whisper of the Maidu and Spirits of Black Rock, and is working on another about the Indian boarding schools. She was involved in the return of Ishis remains to his homeland in 2000 and the placement of the Ishi Marker near the Ishi Wilderness Area in 2007. The book is published by the Association for Northern California Historical Research (ANCHR), which will be selling the book in the Butte County area, and possibly other northeastern California locations. ANCHR is associated with Special Collections, Meriam Library, California State University-Chico. When I sat down to write this column, I realized that there are a lot of reasons that I could set Holly apart this week. Holly is one of the women I have known for many years. Sometimes that makes writing about someone easier and sometimes it makes it harder. This column is a ministry that comes from God telling me that someone matters to Him for the most every day of reasons. I could encounter someone a hundred times or have never met them and BAM, I get the knowing that they are the next You Matter person. As I said, there are a list of reasons why Holly matters. Just like many of you, she is a great mom, she is a wonderful friend, wife, sister, daughter, daughter-in-law and mother of two incredibly lucky dogs. One only need to have a Facebook account to see that the dogs, well, they are the center of the Beaven household. All of this said, there is something more about Holly that sets her apart this week. Holly is a cheerleader. Holly is the first person to reach out to the hurt and the struggling with encouragement. Holly has a nature that is nurturing and healing. The best thing about her nature is the way she heals through sharing her own struggles. Holly is one of the few people I have witnessed who openly talks about her own dealings in the Battle of the Mind. That part of us that wants to be better and more mature but is hijacked by the past. When I need anything, you only need to ask or people I know have struggled, and she will do what she can to ease your situation.
