igEp held its annual Carlson Leadership Academy the weekend of
March 2 at the Warner Center Marriott in Woodland Hills. CA Delta
sent a 19-man delegation, backed by volunteers Bob Trovaten '67, Skip
Dahlkamp '63, Bob Gibbs '63, Ron Smith '69, Troy Hanson, Indiana
Zeta '02, and faculty fellow Christine Probett. The 19-man contingent was
the largest group and contained the current elected officers and others who
aspire to chapter leadership. Chapter leaders and others from the western
U.S. totaled upwards of 275 men, ranging from California all the way
up north to Alaska, including Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, Nevada,
and Arizona.
CLA's purpose is to train leaders in their respective areas of responsibility
in order to be more effective in their roles. The event also serves as a venue
for SigEp to honor chapters and individuals for outstanding performance.
The Talent Power Award was given to only two chapters in the western
region and one of them was CA Delta! This award is given for strong
recruitment practices and the Balanced Man Scholarship. It also recognizes
that men who are recruited are only among the best that the university has
to offer. The fall recruitment group of 45 had an average high school GPA
of 3.82 and included leaders, athletes, and young entrepreneurs.
CA Delta alumnus Bob Gibbs '63 was honored as the Volunteer of
the Year at a special alumni/volunteer awards ceremony on Saturday
afternoon. Bob has been a vital member of the CA Delta AVC for 18
years. He has been instrumental in building a coherent network of local
SigEp alumni through organizing quarterly lunch meetings and he played
a key role in hosting Dan Moore, author of Promise Lost, the story of Lt.
Steve Joyner.
During the Saturday evening awards ceremony, CA Delta AVC member
Ron Smith '69 received the Exemplary Service Award. This award
represents significant support and involvement with SigEp over an
extended period of time.
Congratulations to CA Delta and all of our award recipients!
