(Continued from page 2) It was the first Michigan baseball team to win 20 games. Pontius' best friend on the team was George Sisler, who, along with Branch Rickey, was later inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. COACHING AND THE WAR YEARS After graduation from Michigan law, Pontius spent some years as an assistant football coach at Tennessee (where he introduced the "Yost-Michigan system"). In 1916 he returned to Michigan as the line coach. However, in August 1917, with the United States' entry into WWI, Pontius enlisted and served as a second lieutenant in a field artillery unit. PONTIUS MEETS DAN KRAUER In 1919, after his discharge from the Army, Pontius began his business career. By 1938, he had joined the Eberstadt firm as a vice president. One summer, he ran into a sharp New York high school kid by the name of Dan Krauer and must have recognized inherent talent in Dan because he made Dan that offer to attend Michigan that Dan couldn't refuse! Just one of many acts of kindness that Pontius undoubtedly rendered throughout his long, storied athletic and business career. VALUES OF ALPHA DELTA PHI This is just another terrific example of Alpha Delta Phi values. Here is a graduate from over 100 years ago who took the time to help a sassy kid from New York City find his way to Ann Arbor. This story shows that you never know how a kindness will be repaid, or when. Dan Krauer found a way to recognize and honor Miller Pontius' kindness by making a pledge to the current capital campaign. Every one of us had the privilege to benefit from our Alpha Delta Phi experience. If you haven't already, now would be a good time to return that kindness by making a pledge to the capital campaign. And, if you've already made a pledge, thank you! Would you consider enhancing it? What better way to give quality young men an opportunity to benefit from the Alpha Delt experience?
