Preserve our Future W hen Dan Krauer '63 made his pledge to the capital campaign this year, he did so in memory of Miller Pontius 1914. This piqued the curiosity of several campaign leaders as to who was Miller Pontius and why Dan would make his pledge in memory of him. So Dan was contacted and we now bring you "the rest of the story." DAN KRAUER'S DEAL Dan Krauer grew up in the New York City area in the 1940s-'50s. His mother then worked for an investment banking firm, F.E. Eberstadt & Co. While he was in high school, Dan was fortunate to get a summer job at Eberstadt. He met a fellow named Miller Pontius, who was a vice president of the firm. Dan must have done a great job that summer because he apparently impressed Pontius. When it came time for Dan to go to college, Pontius announced that Dan would go to the University of Michigan, and, oh, by the way, Miller secured a full-ride four-year scholarship from the U of M Club of New York for Dan to attend Michigan. Needless to say, Dan knew a good thing when he saw it and packed off to Ann Arbor that fall. He went on to join Alpha Delta Phi and enjoyed a great undergraduate experience. Later, he went on to Indiana U for an MBA and law degree. PONTIUS ENROLLS AT THE UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN That still leaves more to know about Miller Pontius. It turns out that after graduating from Everts High School in Circleville, Ohio, in 1908, Pontius enrolled at the University of Michigan in 1910 and joined the Peninsular Chapter of Alpha Delta Phi. Remember that the current house was completed in 1910, so Miller was probably one of the first to reside in the "new" house! MICHIGAN FOOTBALL ALL-AMERICAN Pontius went out for the U of M football team as a freshman and played full back. As a sophomore, however, Coach Fielding H. Yost had the need for a "slashing" tackle on his renowned "point a minute" team. By the 1913 season, Pontius was a star as the Wolverines outscored their opponents 175 to 21. At the end of the 1913 season, Pontius was a consensus first-team All- American tackle, the first ever All- American tackle from Michigan. His teammates had assigned him the nickname "Brute" somewhere along the way. He also played baseball at Michigan for coach Branch Rickey. In 1913, he was the first baseman for Rickey's best team at Michigan, a squad that went 21-4-1. Who Was Miller Pontius 1914? (Continued on page 4)
