SIGMA CHI FRATERNITY AT KANSAS STATE UNIVERSITY spring 2018 I t has been quite year so far at 1224 Fremont. Through the efforts of many generous alumni, renovation of the house began in December. This was made possible thanks to the donors who answered our call and assisted in raising an additional $400,000 by the December 18 deadline. I want to commend Mom Julie for her tremendous effort to pack all of the items we have stored for this semester and the undergraduate brothers for their diligence in cleaning out the house at the end of the semester. Construction began on schedule on December 19 due to their hard work. The move into the Jardine Apartments went uneventfully and the men are settling in nicely. They are using one of the private meeting rooms to hold chapter and we are planning a formal dinner at the Union next month. Sigma Chi Needs You To date, A New Era campaign has raised $2,252,464 toward our $2.7 million goal. With nearly $500,000 to go, it is essential we receive additional support. If you have yet to donate, please return the enclosed pledge form today so future young men may gain the same life-changing Sigma Chi experience you did. Pledges can be spread out over a five-year period; and those contributing $5,000 or more (or $84 a month for five years) will have their name on our permanent recognition plaque. If you have already contributed, please consider an additional one-time gift, adding a sixth year to your pledge schedule, or increasing your total gift by 20%. Chapter Dedicated to Recruitment 365 Days a Year On January 27, Mark Miller (a volunteer Sigma Chi alumnus from Texas) visited Kansas State and held a daylong seminar on recruitment and branding that has been developed by the SIGMA CHI RENOVATION COMMENCES THANKS TO GENEROUS DONORS We Need You to Close the $500,000 Gap Front porch and patio area mid-demolition. New three-man room after framing. Excavation for the new stair pit. International Fraternity, called Mission 365. As the name suggests, recruitment must be occurring continuously to be maximally effective. This was particularly timely as we face the challenges of recruiting a pledge class without a house in which to hold events. The event was well attended by over 40 undergraduates and four alumni brothers. International Fraternity Institutes New Safety Policies The years 2016 and 2017 were tragic in the Greek- letter world with the deaths of four young men due to the combination of hazing and alcohol. While these tragedies did not occur at any Sigma Chi chapters, the International Fraternity has rightly recognized that changes must happen to protect our young men and strengthen our beloved Fraternity. The following changes have been announced by the International Fraternity: • Reinforced and reaffirmed that alcohol is banned at all rush and recruitment events. • Prohibition of hard liquor in all fraternity houses (this was already the case at Kansas State). • Mandated that all pledge education programs not exceed five weeks, effective August 1, 2018. This had been eight weeks previously. • Elimination of alcohol at social events during the period of pledgeship, effective August 1, 2018. • Cap on the size of social events to a 3:1 ratio of guests to Sigma Chis. The members of the Chapter Advisory Council have spoken at length with the officers and members of the chapter about these changes. They must be followed and embraced. Our vision of "Excellence across the Board" mandates that. In Hoc, Doug Burton, M.D. '89 Chapter Advisory Council Chairman
