THREE GENERATIONS OF DELTA GAMMAS Get to Know the DeVoe Family C arolyn Nitschke DeVoe '50 was the first Delta Gamma in what would become a long line of members in her family. Carolyn's daughter, Lynn DeVoe Kuehn, Alpha Omicron '75, daughter-in-law, Anne Elmer DeVoe '98, and granddaughters, Becky Kuehn Lampros, Alpha Omicron '06, Leeann Kuehn, Beta Zeta '10, and Maddie DeVoe, Eta Zeta '17, all chose the ΔΓ path to sisterhood and success. The extensive Delta Gamma lineage Carolyn Nitschke DeVoe '50 would forefront was unbeknownst to her in the fall of 1949, her freshman year at The Ohio State University. "That was my first time away from home, and I really wanted to find my own little community on campus," she recalled. The women of Epsilon Chapter were inviting, providing Carolyn with the sense of belonging she desired so much and showing her the beauty of camaraderie and sisterhood. Carolyn's leadership was fine-tuned through her DG membership, and over the course of her undergraduate years, she served as president of her pledge class, president of Epsilon, and president of junior Panhellenic at OSU. She befriended many of her DG sisters, as well as Roberta Abernethy '23, an alumna whose spirit and character left a lasting impression on Carolyn. Today, Carolyn is just as passionate about DG as ever before. "I carry on what Epsilon has given to me," she shared. Her friendships with her chapter sisters are still strong, and Carolyn makes a point to keep in touch with as many alumnae as possible. "I speak to Barbara Moore Hudson '50, my pledge sister, every single day," she stated. "She's been my best friend for 64 years. We were in each other's weddings." One of Carolyn's greatest prides is her family, several of whom are also DG members. Her daughter, Lynn DeVoe Kuehn, Alpha Omicron '75, was initiated into DG at Miami University and later transferred to Epsilon Chapter at OSU, where she graduated from the School of Nursing. "The women at Epsilon sincerely welcomed Lynn, even though she was a transfer member," Carolyn said. Her son, Keith, a Delta Tau Delta alumnus from Miami University and a Columbus-based architect, married Anne Elmer DeVoe '98, an Epsilon alumna initiate who completed her undergraduate at Wellesley College for Women and continued her education at the OSU College of Law. Years later, three of Carolyn's grandchildren would also choose DG at their respective colleges: Becky Kuehn Lampros, Alpha Omicron '06, at Miami University; Leeann Kuehn, Beta Zeta '10, at Denison University; and Maddie DeVoe, Eta Zeta '17, at the University of Chicago. "I feel really fortunate to have attended each of my family member's initiations," Carolyn said. "DG has been important to each of us, even my late husband of 63 years, Keith. He was a Phi Gamma Delta from OSU whom I met while he was serving as his chapter's president and I was serving as Epsilon's president. We've been very Greek-oriented since." Carolyn has enjoyed visiting the chapter house and seeing its evolution over the years, one of the benefits of living in Columbus. "Dena Barry Logan '76 and Leslie Smith '75 are taking remarkable care of the chapter," she noted, "as are the active DGs, who have done a wonderful job of carrying on the legacy." "I hope my 68-year involvement in ΔΓ will continue on through my family," Carolyn says. "Once a DG, always a DG. No matter what chapter you are from or where you are today, we are bound together by the golden anchor. DG will always be there for you, so please let it in your lives. Always 'Do Good!'"
