Shortly before Christmas, Nolan and Laura's newborn son, Grit, was diagnosed with embryonal rhab- domyosarcoma. Grit is only the second 3-month- old on record to be diagnosed with this soft tissue mass on the prostate. After a few proce- dures and overnight stays at Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Grit was moved to St. Jude. Fundraising efforts in the local community began immediately. Laura is staying with Grit full-time in Memphis, and Nolan travels between Lawrence and Memphis every week to maintain his job, but also see Grit. Nolan is a passionate Kansas State alumnus, so I knew Theta Iota joining #TeamGrit would mean a lot to him and his family. Internal Philanthropy Chairman Bridget Howard '17 and I coordi- nated efforts to take donations on a chapter night. Women in the chapter could dress down, rather than wear business attire, if they gave a minimum $2 donation. Members donated between $2 and $50, and we were able to raise $350 for the family in just one evening! When I reached out to Nolan to let him know about our fundraiser, he was absolutely thrilled. He explained that his family is staying at Tri Delta Place at St. Jude during this time, and they have been very comfortable there. He thanked us for this fundraising effort, but also for all the work we put into our philanthropic efforts. He said, "Twenty years later and I'm fall- ing in love with the Tri Deltas all over again." The family just recently found out that Grit's tumor has not being responding to chemotherapy, and has grown slightly. They are now in the first weeks of a more aggressive chemotherapy, which Grit will receive every day. They are anticipat- ing at least a yearlong stay in Tri Delta Place at St. Jude, but we sure hope they can come home sooner. Delta Love, Elizabeth Patton '16 Vice President of Chapter Development elizabethpatton@ksu.edu Theta Iota helped support a child with cancer near our community. Sisters brought in donations to help Grit and his family.
