The celebration took place at the intersection of Person Street and Deep Creek Road. The Deep Creek Road Gateway project has been implemented from the Deep Creek Road Redevelopment Plan, which was completed in 2002. Other projects completed in the plan include: Partnering with a local developer (United Developers) to build 148 affordable multi-family housing units; demolishing four blighted properties; and providing funding for the construction of 20 affordable single-family houses constructed by Fayetteville Habitat for Humanity, as well as various individual full-housing rehabilitation projects. The City will continue to seek redevelopment opportunities in the Deep Creek Road Community. For more information, call Adolph Thomas at (910) 433-1935. Recreation Facilities Offering Free Wi-Fi Service Several recreation facilities operated by Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation are offering free Wi-Fi service to the public. Service is available at Cliffdale, Kiwanis, Smith, and Westover recreation centers, Lake Rim Park, and the Seabrook Resource Center (located adjacent to Chalmers Pool off Langdon Street). In the future, Massey Hill Recreation Center and the N.C. Veterans Park will also feature free Wi-Fi service. "Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation thought it was important to offer our customers this free service," said James McMillan, recreation division manager. "This provides yet another reason to utilize recreation facilities. The general public will now have another tool thanks to the Wi-Fi service." Free W-Fi at the recreation facilities has been an ongoing request from local residents who regularly use smart phones and laptops. The service helps with classes, meetings, presentations, and the many uses for the multipurpose rooms in the facilities, including tabletop exercises, which help plan for natural disasters, such as the April 16, 2011 tornado. The Wi-Fi will also be of assistance during times of crisis when people are displaced from their homes and are using the center as a shelter. Those in shelters, and those using the recreation facilities on a daily basis, can keep in touch with events and news on their smart phones and laptops by having access to the free Wi-Fi service. The City of Fayetteville's Information Technology (IT) Department installed the service at the facilities, similarly to their Wi-Fi installation project several years ago at Fayetteville Regional Airport. Thanks to the IT Department, meeting rooms in City Hall now also have Wi-Fi. For more information about Fayetteville-Cumberland Parks and Recreation, log onto www.fcpr.us.
