8 www.DesertMessenger.com March 7, 2018 Quartzsite Museum News The Quartzsite Historical Society was deeply saddened by the passing of our President, Dennis Wilskey. Dennis died suddenly on February 18 . He was a long-time volunteer for the Society and an active participant in the activities at the Museum. Richard "Dick" Thompson, a past Presi- dent and longtime volunteer passed away February 25th and Florene Parks, from Parker, passed away February 27. She helped maintain one of the last homes that Wyatt Earp owned in Vidal, California and was a supporting volunteer at the Museum. Both Dennis and Florene were also members of the Parker Historical Society. They will be sorely missed. The premier showing of the new documentary regarding Hi Jolly was a huge success, with over 600 people attending. Our thanks to the Di- rector, Mert Turkoglu, for focusing on one of our folk heroes There will be numerous showings of the fi lm throughout the United States. The "Walk in the Past" event at the Cemetery was great fun and the Museum benefi tted from the sales table there. Our latest fi eld trip was along the Sunkist Trail viewing Army encampments and WASP's Quartzsite sign and other points of interest in the Quartzsite area. The Museum winter hours continue through March and we have been providing docent tours for groups touring through Quartzsite including the Alfa Off-Road Riders. Come join us in examining the history of the area. Over 450 people visited the Museum in February. Trivia Question of the Week: From 1947 to 1972 the population of Quartzsite was frequently under 100 full time residents. During that period, how many wedding ceremonies did Justice of the Peace Hagley perform? Come by the museum for the answer to the question (no phone calls please). By the way, for the last issue in March we plan to reveal the answers to the questions, in case you missed them. The issues can be seen on-line, if you have left town by then. We have a variety of books and postcards relating to Quartzsite that are for sale. We are continuing to recycle plastic and aluminum, which can be dropped off any time at our front gate collection can. We are a non-profi t historical society. Visiting the Museum is free, al- though donations are always welcome. The Museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 am to 4 pm and is located at 161 Main Street (park- ing in rear). At Thursday March 1st meeting the Quartzsite Art Guild held a new logo contest among the artists. Voting will continue throughout March. The winning piece will become the Guild's familiar face for art show signs. Leaving the purple and black logo of cowboys riding into the sunset, by: Christine Schlaget- ter to be recognized as the Southwestern Roundup "End of the Season Art Show & Sale" held in February. This decision is to help folk know we hold two separate ART SHOWS throughout the season. The Art Guild meetings are held the fi rst and third Thursday of each month, offi cially November thru March. Starting at 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M. at the Senior Center, 40 Moon Mountain Ave. Quartzsite. The fi rst week meetings include a short meeting with follow up evalu- ating the third Thursdays meetings of learning and painting. The cost is only $5.00 to join and $5.00 to be a Senior Center member.
