The Golden Heart
I
n the past year, the California Alpha chapter has
undergone significant changes, both physically
and fundamentally. The most notable change
was the address, moving from 2739 to 2728
Channing Way. The renovated 22-room house is
now home to over 40 brothers. In over 100 years,
the largest manpower for SigEp at Berkeley has
been 95 men in 1987. Now in 2018, with these
past years of growth, we have seen a significant
increase in chapter size. Sixteen new members
in Fall 2016, 10 recruited in Spring 2017, 14 in
Fall 2017, and 20 already so far in Spring 2018.
That puts the manpower up to 94 members at the
start of 2018, which is just one man short of the
95 person record, which we expect to break very
soon! Academics remain strong, as we amassed a
cumulative GPA of 3.51, one of the highest in the
Cal Greek community.
INCREASING ACADEMICS AND
CHAMPIONS IN INTRAMURALS
With a number of brothers serving as teaching
assistants and tutors, the potential to improve
academically increases each year. Sound body
remains important as well, as over half the
brotherhood participated in an intramurals
team this year, taking home three softball
championships and two in dodgeball in the past
four semesters.
OVER $12,000 RAISED
FOR DIABETES RESEARCH
Pedal for Life continues to be at the forefront
of our philanthropy. This year, 20 riders—13
brothers and seven members of the Cal Triathlon
Team—completed our annual ride from Sather
Gate to Santa Monica Pier with the help of two
support drivers, raising over $12,000 for the
Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation for Type
1 Diabetes research in the process. On the first
day, we were joined by five alumni on our first
100-mile leg to our Watsonville campground,
which is always a welcome treat. To cap it all off,
Karson Yu '19, a triathlon team rider on PFL,
joined our brotherhood the next semester.
STOP BY AND SEE US
Since I've joined the chapter, SigEp has
developed significantly, and I look forward to
what the future has in store for us. Please feel free
to stop by the chapter house and see what we're
up to. We would love to meet you!
