CUMBERLAND Library Earns National Medal
The Cumberland County Public Library & Information Center has been named as one of 10 recipients of the 2012 National Medal for Museum and Library Service. The National Medal will be presented today in Washington, D.C. The National Medal is conferred on institutions that make a difference for individuals, families and communities. The library offers job skills training, entrepreneurial opportunities, one-on-one assistance and job fairs. The library's award-winning programs also promote literacy, the arts, culture and history. The library is also a resource for the military community, with its close proximity to Fort Bragg. "The modern library transforms its community. Just by entering our doors, a person gains the potential for intellectual growth," said Cumberland County Library Director Jody Risacher. "Public libraries are also a positive force that keeps democracy vibrant." Medal winners are selected from nominations of institutions across the nation that demonstrate innovative approaches to public service, exceeding the expected levels of community outreach.

County Receives Housing Award
Cumberland County has received the 2012 Housing North Carolina Award for achievement in affordable housing from the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency. The award was for three apartment complexes that are part of Fayetteville's Carolina Commons, a Hope VI Project. Dogwood Manor, Oak Run and Sycamore Park were honored as outstanding affordable housing developments that can serve as models for other communities. Four other housing developments from throughout the state were also honored. The Housing Finance Agency recognized United Developers
of Fayetteville and The Communities Group of Maryland, which developed the Fayetteville complexes, as well as the City of Fayetteville, Fayetteville Metropolitan Housing Authority and Cumberland County, which supported the project.
