Willie Write, a long-time community supporter, sent a cheer to the Fayetteville Observer last week complimenting and congratulating Sally Shutt, public information director for Cumberland County, and county offi cials for the excellent job they did in creating and executing the fi rst Cumberland County Citizen's Academy. This program follows in the footsteps of the City of Fayetteville, which has a similar program. However, in the case of Cumberland County, this was their fi rst attempt at providing residents up-close and personal insight into how our county operates and the policies, procedures and people who are charged with the oversight. So, I concur with Wright. I was also one of the 30 plus people who graduated last Tuesday from the county's inaugural program, which was executed extremely well. Everyone attending defi nitely got the impression that this was a serious project committed to for the purpose of providing a positive "long-term" impact on the development of Cumberland County. County Commissioners Jeannette Council and Jimmy Keefe were on hand, along with Shutt and county staff, in support and celebration of this occasion. In addition to receiving a beautiful plaque and Cumberland County-lapel pin, we were also treated with a cake and refreshments. Nice touch. Shutt is already planning the next Citizens' Academy for spring 2013, and I want to go on record as recommending it to everyone for the following reasons. First, Cumberland County is making an extreme effort to educate and involve its residents in the operation of local government. Why? Because they know an informed resident makes for a better and happier community. Involvement means a better understanding and greater transparency in government. Sure, it's sometimes easy for us to sit back and criticize county policies and the decisions of our elected offi cials if Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Saturday Fayetteville's Weather Forecast Friday Thursday November 8 November 9 November 10 we don't understand how our government works or who is actually responsible for important decisions and operations taking place each and every day. Cumberland County Citizen's Academy class of 2012. Next, the academy will create an expanded and more knowledgeable pool of community volunteers for the future. Cumberland County Commissioners and staff will recognize academy graduates as having greater insights, dedication and qualifi cations when requesting to be appointed to a county board or committee. Finally, not only do you get a better understanding of how our county government works but you get to meet face-to-face with the people who make the decisions and actually do the work. This is the human side of our government. At this point it becomes clear that these professionals are just like you. More importantly, you see that running Cumberland County is a gigantic undertaking and that the people who are "taking care of business" take their business seriously. are under the direction of competent and talented leadership. These people are the responsibility of 13-year veteran County Manager James Martin and he works for six elected Cumberland County Commissioners and those commissioners work for us. So, you see how important and valuable this opportunity is. It will always come back to us. I encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity. It's informative, short (seven weeks) and free! Cumberland County has done its part. Now, it's time to do ours. Side note: If they consider creating an Alumni Association Willie Wright and I will host it. Thank you for All of the people, all the processes and all of the departments reading Up & Coming Weekly. Coming Weekly, COMMENTS? editor@ upandcomingweekly.com.
