GUZ BUZ 3 Strengthening the Brotherhood Rewarding LCA Experience Motivates Ken Dull, GU 826, to Pay It Forward O f the many fraternities located on North Carolina State University's campus, Lambda Chi Alpha stood above the rest in the eyes of McKinley "Ken" Dull, GU 826. The encouragement and support from brothers in both his personal life and academic career solidified his decision to join the brotherhood. "It was a great way to stay involved, not to mention that the prettiest women on fraternity court were there as well." Ken said. "Everyone looked out for one another, no matter the situation." After graduating in 1985 with a degree in civil engineering, he founded McKinley Building Corporation, a commercial construction management, general contracting, and design build firm, where he serves as president. Located in Wilmington, N.C., McKinley Building Corporation has grown to become a leading, locally owned commercial builder with more than 280 projects to date. Ken was awarded the Outstanding Economic Impact award in 2003 by the Wilmington Council for Entrepreneurial Development. He believes that "quality, value, and attention to details" were essential components to his success and that these factors were reinforced during his time in Gamma Upsilon. Relying on the strong Gamma Upsilon brotherhood bonds that still exist today, Ken encourages alumni to think about how their own Lambda Chi Alpha experiences advanced their lives and to get involved in supporting the LXA: A Legacy of Excellence Continues campaign in any way they can. He believes that his experiences, like others, in Gamma Upsilon Chapter had a critical impact on his life, and he will do what he can to support those same experiences for the active Chapter. "The real gift is the joy you feel that you positively impacted someone else's life," Ken stated. As an alumnus, Ken hopes that alumni take the time to reconnect with brothers and the undergraduate Chapter. "There are a lot of people that would love to hear from you," Ken said. "It is never too late to reconnect." He is proud of the progress and achievements of both the alumni and active Chapter as they strive to meet new goals and achieve excellence. "It is a good time to be a Gamma Upsilon alumnus and a Lambda Chi Alpha," Ken stated. Ken lives in Wilmington with his wife, Vicki, who was the executive director of the Harrelson Center until she retired in 2016. They have two daughters: Madison, a 2016 NCSU graduate, and Catie Leigh, a junior at Chapel Hill. Ken enjoys traveling and playing golf. G amma Upsilon Chapter has seen significant growth in recent years and continued to make strides during the fall semester. The Chapter's unprecedented size of 99 active brothers has only continued to grow with the recruitment of our newest 31 brothers who were initiated the first weekend in December. We thank High Delta Matt Stanaland, GU 1346, for facilitating a successful recruitment, while ensuring to emphasize the values, successes, and expectations of Gamma Upsilon Chapter and Lambda Chi Alpha. GAMMA UPSILON ACHIEVES IMPRESSIVE GPA The Chapter GPA of 3.25 is third in overall fraternity GPA, but is first for fraternities with more than 60 members. In addition, 46 brothers made the Dean's list during the spring semester, and High Sigma Joe Magraw, GU 1290, continues to hold brothers accountable for their grades. If brothers fall beneath our requirements, he offers resources to help ensure they remain in good standing. PHILANTHROPICALLY FOCUSED Our first philanthropic event was the Low Country Boil partnered with Sigma Kappa sorority, which benefit the Alzheimer's Foundation. High Theta Richard Skowron, GU 1300, also planned several key events throughout the semester to help raise funds to benefit Feeding America, a hunger relief organization with a nationwide network of food banks that feed those less fortunate. On October 28, we also hosted the Pumpkin Bash, where teams raised donations and competed in Olympic-style games that involved smashing pumpkins. We raised $2,500 dollars at the event, but hope to hit $4,000 through our GoFundMe page and T-shirt sales. FUTURE LOOKING BRIGHT The highlighted areas amount to only a small fraction of the hard work the Chapter has accomplished this year. Brothers intend to continue working toward excellence in all of our endeavors, while growing our brotherhood. I am proud to be among their greatness. We would also not be where we are today without our loyal alumni base, and we are grateful for your support.
