8A Daily News – Saturday, November 3, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship Voices of Faith Is science at odds with religion? The Kansas City Star (MCT) TRUTH The Rev. Betty Hanna-Witherspoon, pastor of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church, Kansas City, Mo.: I do not find science to be at odds with religion, perhaps, because I define religion, my faith, as the way I think about God and science as the way humans explore and search for explanations of the inner and outer universe around us. In my faith, God orders the universe and we humans spend our efforts trying to explain the order. The faith community in which I serve declares that God has not changed. My response to that statement is, "Indeed, God has not changed, but our human understanding of God has changed. As we grow spiritually and intellectually, our understanding of God grows also." Isaiah 55:8-9 says it well, "For my thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways my ways, says the Lord, For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways high- er than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts." We are forever in search of God's thoughts and God's ways. Science that results in greater understanding of the uni- SCIENCE CAN REVEAL THE UNIVERSE'S Pulpit Freedom Sunday verse is a gift from God. All good and perfect gifts come from God, the book of James tells us. We may not under- stand all gifts or we may use some gifts badly; the fault, however, is not with God, but with our stage of ethical, intel- lectual and spiritual development. God has not stopped revealing truth and may well use what we call science to do so. Sunday, Oct. 7, was designated Pulpit Freedom Sunday by the min- istry bearing the same name. Begun in 2008 by the Rev. Jim Garlow, it attracted a handful of pastors. The number has grown steadily and more than fifteen hundred spoke out in 2012. They declared the right to express their faith is a gift from God, not government. They stated that the Johnson Amendment – added to the IRS Code in 1954 to forbid tax exempt organizations from endorsing candidates – violates the First Amend- ment and is non-binding. They expressed their views on any issue they believed could be addressed in faith – including who is best qualified under God to hold political office. They mailed their sermons to the IRS. This GodTalk piece will express my God-given right – and responsibil- ity – to speak as I believe God speaks. No one is forced to agree with any- thing I say, but by the God I serve no one will tell me when or what to speak. land Park, Kan.: A serious answer to your question is com- plicated. Some religions with formal structures like an ecclesiastical hierarchy may prefer a religious dogma over a scientific theory. We witness that today in the discussions of Darwinian evolution. Some religions prefer biblical literal- ism to scientific theories that the biblical creation story (Genesis 1-4) ought not be understood as historical fact because it contradicts established scientific theory. However, other religions include consideration of scien- THE TWO CAN'T BE CONTRADICTORY Rabbi Mark Levin of Congregation Beth Torah, Over- tific truths in their theology. Such religions make it a point that theology may not contradict scientific fact. In Reform Judaism, history and science are systematically included as part of our theological structure. Joshua could not literally have stopped the sun in Israel's Ayalon Valley because that contradicts the laws of physics. No supernatural miracle occurred. The truths unveiled by science and the humanities help to develop theology. The Johnson Amendment is named for its sponsor, Lyndon B. Johnson. It pre-supposes that because religious operations are permitted to pay no taxes to government they should also have no say in the choos- ing of those who would lead that gov- ernment. Early Americans gave the vote only to tax-paying property own- ers, but Americans came to believe that citizenship alone is the only crite- rion for voting. No citizen is denied the right to influence public policy because they may pay no taxes. It should be no stretch to conceive of the religious exemption for tax free insti- tutions. But even if the conception does stretch some minds, the First Amend- ment states clearly that no law shall be made restricting the free exercise of faith. Anyone who passed high school American Government knows the power to tax is the power to control; taxing faith- based ministries is restrict- ing free exercise. And any- one who has read the Dec- laration of Independence knows Americans are endowed by our Creator – not our government – with our constitutional rights. I have never endorsed a candidate for office in my life, and I won't begin now. My function as a Christian leader is to estab- lish principles within which people may – if they choose – operate as they choose their leaders. That said, if anyone reading this post and the questions I pose in it thinks I am implicitly endorsing a candidate for president that is their problem and not mine, for if I do in fact endorse it is my constitutional right. James Wilson GodTalk changing his story and blaming others for the changes? Which one declares himself a staunch ally of Israel while refusing to meet with her leaders and telling other leaders how he despises them? Which one visits and stands with Israel? And while we are at it, which one releas- es – through his staff – secret information about the mili- tary tactics that killed Osama bin Laden and tells the leader of Russia that he can be more flexible on defensive weapons programs after he is re-elected president? First Question: The Bible says for freedom we are set free in Christ. Of the two main candidates for president, which one believes citizens should freely choose their healthcare plan and which one made his signature achievement the imposition of a national healthcare plan that was opposed by some 70% of the popula- tion? Which one says regulations on business should only level the playing field and which one says no business was ever built without government investment and influence? Second Question: The Christ of God instructs us to let our yes be yes and our no be no; truth telling should be our default. Which of the two main candidates for president tells the truth about recent events in Libya that took American lives and which one keeps best shaped in the context of tradition- al marriage between a man and a woman. Which candidate adopts this view of both life and family? Which one defies it – and every legitimate study ever done on either issue? And for that matter, which one claimed the government as the source of our rights and which one the Creator in a recent presidential debate? Word of God says that human life is a self-authenti- cating gift from God that is Third Question: The Readers who claim the Name of the God of the Bible – and any who find these Biblical principles make sense whether or not they believe this God – are invited to make their choice in alignment with Him. Any who reject this model for our exis- tence are welcome to do as they think best. I'll not question their right to do it. James A. Wilson is the author of Living As Ambassadors of Relationships and The Holy Spirit and the End Times – available at local bookstores or by e-mailing him at praynorthstate@charter.net. Science empirically analyzes the physical world. Reli- gion describes the interaction between physical and spiritu- al realities. The two investigate different aspects of reality and need not be contradictory. But ultimately, over centuries and millennia, religious verities must conform with scien- tific truth or society will stagnate. Religious dogma may lag far behind scientific insights. But an earth-centered idea of the universe must concede before a heliocentric model because it represents a more accurate portrayal of reality. Religion enables humans to live morally with reality. Ulti- mately it cannot contradict science. Send your questions for our panel of religion columnists to Helen Gray at The Star, 1729 Grand Blvd., Kansas City, MO 64108. Send email to hgray@kcstar.com.
