Most of us have lost perennials that have prevailed in previous years only to succumb to this year’s devastating frosts. Fortunately every year, horticultur- ists from all over the world work hard creating newer and better vari- eties of our favorite plants. I would like to take this time to introduce you to some of the brand new intro- ductions. For those of you who love hostas, as I do, there are two new "must haves" for your garden. The first is called ‘White Feather’. Grown in full shade it reaches 18- 36 inches high. It is very unique in color. The emerging leaves are completely white and guaranteed to create a sensation. With maturity, the leaves transform magically into a blend of green and cream. Plant these hostas in groups together for a startling impact. The second hosta is a charming miniature. It grows only to eight inches tall. ‘Mighty Mouse’ has striking blue-green leaves edged with creamy yellow. It holds these bright colors well through the sum- mer heat. Pairs nicely with anoth- er mini named ‘Blue Mouse Ears’. For the hot sunny areas in your garden or in pots, there are the new Supertunias which need no pruning. ‘Pretty Much Picas- so’ boasts colors of violet-purple with a chartreuse-green edge. Another Supertunia is ‘Raspberry Blast with bright pink and soft pink flowers in pinwheel patterns. Many people prefer colorful perennials versus annuals as they return yearly. A good selection would be a daylily named ‘Explod- ed Pumpkin’ since it’s double flow- ers are also re-bloomers. The petals are an exciting orange with reddish purple edges. Another positive fea- ture is that it is semi evergreen dur- ing the winter. Another new desirable perennial is the very first double flowering phlox ‘Tiara’. These fragrant crisp white flowers contrast nicely with their dark green foliage. It is guar- anteed to be a coveted treasure in any garden. Check your local nurseries or garden centers for these new varieties and become the envy of the neighborhood. For further information about these plants or the Red Bluff Gar- den Club, call me at 384-1913. This month’s program will be Photogra- phy of Flowers by Lee Hebner, Crown Photography and Shasta College Instructor. Mark your calendars for our 49th annual flower show, "Life in the Garden" May 1 at 2 p.m. at the fair- grounds in Red Bluff. Come visit our plant sale and purchase a bar- gain.
