Although he only knew one brother at the beginning of the night, a fellow Mu, Tom Carlson (135) '93, Girard ended the night with new connections and DKE friendships. "I was immediately surrounded by brothers who were eager to engage in conversation and cocktails. It didn't matter that we all went to different schools and were of difference ages," he said. "We shared traditions and a love of DKE with one another, so we were immediately at ease and interested in learning from and about each other." As an undergraduate, Girard served Mu as social chairman his junior year. His time at DKE helped teach how not to be afraid of trying new experiences, meeting new people, or pushing himself to rise to new challenges. It also reinforced in him the importance of tradition, loyalty, reliability, and relationships. "My favorite memory is one I cannot fully share in print, but it begins with getting lost (en masse) at night in the woods and ends with the Pierce Memorial getting the house cleaning of a lifetime," he said. Throughout the years, Girard has stayed involved with DKE and Colgate through social gatherings in Boston and New York and he advises young alumni brothers maintain relationships after leaving Hamilton, N.Y. "Work hard and play hard. Don't be afraid to reach out to brothers whom you haven't met, both from Mu and other DKE chapters. They'll all likely be there to help give you advice, a hand, or a glass of ruby wine as you move forward in life." Upon graduation in 1993, Girard began his career on the agency side of advertising before moving to the client side and focusing on product marketing. From 1999-2001, he attended business school to expand his toolkit beyond marketing and put his education to good use while working with three different startups between 2001 and 2008. He then took a few years off to focus on family and eventually turned his gardening hobby into a business. After five years focused on building his landscape design business in Rhode Island, he moved to Nantucket. While he still designs gardens for select clients, his main focus is now a land conservation non-profit, The Sconset Trust. Girard manages the Trust's various assets, including 200 acres of open space land and the Sankaty Head Lighthouse. To help him achieve this task, he manages a small team of employees and volunteers. In addition, he is focused on administration, finance, and marketing for the Trust, as well as assisting the executive director with events and fundraising. "I'm a jack of all trades, and happily draw on all of my past experience from work, school, and DKE to succeed," he said. Girard has two children, a set of twins, JP and Read, who are 19. JP is a sophomore at Elon University and Read is taking a gap year. Girard lives in Siasconset, Mass., and can be reached at gruddick@mac.com.
