Sports PREP VOLLEYBALL | LOS MOLINOS 3, MERCY 0 By ANDRE BYIK DN Sports Editor LOS MOLINOS — The Los Molinos Lady Bulldogs volleyball team spoiled Mercy's perfect league record Tuesday night, winning in straight sets 25-21, 27-25, 25-20. The Bulldogs (32-7-1, After taking the first set 25-21, the Bulldogs set themselves up with four set points in the sec- ond before the Warriors came roaring back, notch- ing five straight points in a series sparked by a long, back-and-forth rally, and then a kill by Mercy's Breana Kemp. "We practiced, we focused on Ella," said Clarivel Castillo, the Bulldogs' star junior hit- ter. "We called out 'Ella's in the front row, Ella's in the back row. We tried to stop her, and we did." In the team's previous match at Mercy High School, Fleet had 17 kills. She was held to 11 on Tuesday. his team was confident. "I said, 'look, let's get this, let's turn it around and serve two' and we did it," Konopka said, adding, "Our shirts all say 'Fami- ly' on it. That's actually what we said when we came out of the huddle. We said 'family.'" Los Molinos junior Emily Bailey set up a set point with a soft touch over the net, and Mercy hit the ball out on the suc- ceeding point to give the Bulldogs the set 27-25. Coming into the match, Castillo said she didn't expect a 3-0 sweep. "We thought it would go to five games," she said. Castillo finished with 18 kills, 13 digs and four aces. On Halloween, SF goes orange, black for parade SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Ecstatic baseball fans packed the streets of San Francisco on Wednesday for a confetti- drenched parade and rally honoring the World Series champion Giants — a Halloween treat made even sweeter as a repeat performance from 2010. Tens of thousands of people decked out in the team's holiday-appropri- ate orange and black stood 30 deep behind barriers, climbed trees, camped out overnight and mounted rooftops for a chance to see their favorite players wave from convertibles and get serenaded by Tony Ben- nett singing ''I Left My Heart in San Francisco.'' Noah's double-double too much for Sacramento in season opener CHICAGO (AP) — Joakim Noah scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and the Chicago Bulls got off to a good start without Derrick Rose, beating the Sacramento Kings 93-87 Wednesday in the season opener. Richard Hamilton added 19 points, while Carlos Boozer chipped in with 18 points and eight rebounds. The Bulls are out to show they can get by while their superstar recovers from a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, and this was promising even if it was a struggle. Chicago led by 14 after a 10-0 run in the third quarter and hung on in the fourth after the Kings closed within three several times. A basket by Sacramento's Tyreke Evans (21 points) cut it to 86-83 with 41.2 seconds left, but Luol Deng hit 1 of 2 free throws. Evans couldn't get the ball in bounds, resulting in a five- second violation. That led to two free throws for Hamilton to make it 89-83 with 32.9 sec- onds left, and the Bulls hung on from there. Along with the points and rebounds, Noah set a career high with five steals. He also blocked three shots Hamilton was relentless after being sidelined for much of last season by injuries, and Boozer was effective down the stretch scoring seven points in the fourth. That included a neat three- point play off a miss by Noah in which he crashed to the court and then hit the free throw, making it 86-78 with See KINGS, page 2B credited fans and his players' ''unselfish play'' for helping to lift San Francisco to its second World Series victory in three years, an improba- ble double play for a franchise that had not won the title since 1954.
