Memories on Milledge p. 4 PBF A s the 2017 Georgia Alpha Chapter President, it has been an honor to serve as president of a chapter made up of 277 incredible women. As my term begins to wrap up, it is time that we reflect on the past year! TOP THREE IN ACADEMICS At Georgia Alpha, we pride ourselves on our strong academic presence on campus. With an average GPA of 3.53, our chapter placed in the top three out of all 18 Panhellenic chapters at the University of Georgia. Additionally, we have received numerous Panhellenic awards for our strong academic standing. Our Vice President of Member Development, Katie Lynch '15, always provides many amazing tutoring opportunities and helps members with similar majors network with potential contacts and mentors to help further their academic growth. MORE THAN $15,500 RAISED FOR LITERACY AND FRIENDSHIP FUND We hold two fundraising events each year. In the spring, we held our Classic City Skate Night, which was an ice skating event that raised $7,500 for the Literacy and Friendship Fund. The second fundraising event, Pi Phiesta, is a meal on our lawn with live music, tacos, chips, salsa and queso. Members of the Greek community, surrounding neighborhoods and some of the organizations we work with were invited to attend to raise money for the Literacy and Friendship Fund. This event raised more than $8,000. As a chapter, we are most proud of our Books from Brittany book drive we held in March and April to honor a member of our chapter who lost her life in May 2016. As a chapter, we collected more than 2,000 books to donate to Books for Keeps, an Athens nonprofit that redistributes books back to at-risk children in the community. Brittany's mother, Dawn, was a very big supporter of the book drive and said that it provided a therapeutic opportunity for her and a way to stay connected to Brittany. 86 NEW ANGELS WELCOMED Recruitment took place August 8–14, and we welcomed home 86 new angels to 886 South Milledge. They were greeted with a Willy Wonka- themed Bid Day celebration that was planned by our new member educator, Cate Gibson '15. The New Members were initiated Saturday, October 21. LEADERS ON CAMPUS The Georgia Alpha Chapter of Pi Beta Phi maintains an extremely strong presence throughout the University of Georgia campus. We have numerous women who hold leadership positions on a variety of executive boards. As of this year, we are proud to have three women on the executive board of HEROs, an organization that helps children affected with HIV and AIDS. We have two women on the executive board for Miracle, an organization that helps children who suffer from cancer. Lastly, we have one woman on the Panhellenic executive board. This is the fourth consecutive year that we have had a Pi Phi on Panhellenic Exec. THANK YOU, ALUMNAE, FOR YOUR SUPPORT It has been a very busy year for the women and Executive Council of Georgia Alpha. We have won numerous awards over the last year, including a Pi Beta Phi National Award for Panhellenic Excellence. Thank you to everyone who supports our chapter. We are very grateful for all of the encouragement.
