The Squirrel's Nest 2 A LIFE COMMITTED TO HER FAMILY, COMMUNITY, AND NATURE WELCOME, FALL 2017 NEW MEMBERS! B utch Kohler Damson '58 has always loved nature, gardening, and anything outdoors. She learned her love of gardening and caring for the earth from her mother. And, she's spent her life making her community a better and more beautiful place. Her family moved to Huntsville from Pittsburgh when her engineer father transferred with the Army. As a young girl, she made lifelong friends in Huntsville and was one of five Huntsville High School girls to pledge Alpha Gamma Delta her freshman year. After college and the sudden loss of her father, this self-described "Daddy's Girl" began working as a draftsman at Brown Engineering. A certain young man named Jerry Damson kept asking her out, but she kept declining. One day when he called, she told him she was planting roses, which he didn't believe, so he offered to come help. When he arrived, he was on his best behavior and cleverly asked her mother to go to dinner with them. Mrs. Kohler declined, but allowed Butch to go. And the rest is history. Butch and Jerry have two children, Deke and Susan, and they and their spouses and grandchildren all live in Huntsville, where they own the Damson Automotive Group. As a young mother, the petite powerhouse wanted to get involved. She responded to a radio ad for Boy Scout den mothers and that began a long and admirable career of community involvement. In the 1970s, she started the Operation Green Team and The City of Huntsville Beautification Awards, which have had a lasting impact on the city. She was elected president of the Junior League, where she met wonderful people and learned so much about long-term planning and setting goals and objectives. She put that experience to use in the planning and opening of the Huntsville Botanical Gardens, where she worked tirelessly on the capital campaign and served as president. She chaired the capital campaign for improvements to Burritt on the Mountain, a 167- acre museum devoted to history and education. To honor her service, her statue was erected at the entrance of the park. Most recently, Butch was honored by the WEDC (Women's Economic Development Council) as one of the "Women Honoring Women" designees for her many years of efforts on behalf of her city and community. She has been an incredible servant leader and one of the most giving and caring people I've ever met. She's an example for all of us on how to use our talents, resources, and passions for a greater good. Loyally, Nancy Siniard '74 nsiniard@totalcommarketing.com Avery Adams Franklin, Tenn.
