The 89th edition of the event, which runs Friday through Sunday at the Tehama District Fairground, is expected to feature five 2009 Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association World Champions and eight of the PRCA’s Top 10 all-around cowboys. Seven-time all-around champi- on Trevor Brazile highlights a field that is also expected to include Josh Peek, Clint Robinson, Curtis Cassidy, Ryan Jarrett, Landon McClaugherty, Jake Hannum and Jesse Bail. Defending bareback riding shares with the legendary Ty Mur- ray. John Growney, co-owner of champion Bobby Mote will also be competing along with the 2009 runner-up Clint Cannon. As will last year’s top team rop- ing duo of Nick Sartain and Kollin VonAhn and the defending saddle bronc world champion Jesse Kruse. In Brazile’s specialty event — tie-down roping — The Top 12 cowboys are expected to compete. It could be a great year to catch Brazile in action. With another all- around gold buckle at this year’s National Finals Rodeo, the Decatur, Texas cowboy would break the record he currently Growney Brothers Rodeo — one of the Round-Up’s stock contrac- tors, said having Red Bluff be a part of the Wrangler Tour offers cowboys a chance to rack up points toward the potential mil- lions offered in purse money at the end of the year. “It’s a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow,” he said. As much as the points race is helping to draw in elite talent so to are contractors such as Growney. Joining the Red Bluff based Growney Brothers in supplying the stock this year are Big Bend Rodeo and flying Five Rodeo out of Washington and Marysville’s Flying U Rodeo Company. The four contractors supplied almost 10 percent of the total herd used at the 2009 NFR. Growney said all four compa- nies have built a solid reputation with the cowboys to supply quali- ty stock. Cowboys often select which rodeos to compete in based on whether there is a deep selection of stock with a history of producing high scores. “They want to know the odds are they’re going to win some- thing,” Growney said. One downside to the star-stud- ded field may be local cowboys are left out. The Round-Up this year will limit entries in bareback and sad- dle bronc to 50 riders and to 60 contestants in bull riding. However, Growney said the combination of the top cowboys and top stock will lead to a more appealing rodeo experience for the Perseverance, pressure pay-off By RICHGREENE DN Sports Editor Another strong Lady Spartans defensive perfor- mance, finally got the offense support to make it stand up, Tuesday, during a 1-0 win over Paradise. In the 71st minute, Dia- mond Rypka stepped in front of a Bobcat clearance and played a ball up to Rachel Ward who made no mistake in finding the back of the net once she found herself in a one-on-one situ- ation with the Paradise net- minder. The goal matched Red Bluff’s total for the season and was enough for a defense that has only allowed nine goals against in seven games. Red Bluff improved it’s record to 2-3-2 as Jaklyn Wheeler got the shutout in net. The Lady Spartans dom- inated play with a strong offensive attack during the first 20 minutes of the sec- ond half, but couldn’t find a finishing touch. Paradise appeared to be gaining some momentum, when Red Bluff finally cracked through for the game-winner. Wednesday April 14, 2010 Top stock drawing top cowboys casual fan. Fans will also be treated by the Riata Ranch Cowboy Girls. The specialty act out of Exeter is known for its trick roping and trick riding. Red Bluff’s Eric Layton returns as a bullfighter this year and will be joined by Tim O’Connor. Crash Cooper from Canada will be the clown and barrelman and Bob Tallman and Wayne Brooks will be calling the action. The Round-Up will have a Fri- day 7 p.m. performance and 1:30 p.m. performances on Saturday and Sunday.
