4A – Daily News – Wednesday, April 14, 2010 Commerce business Web calendar is in the spotlight • Business Spotlight – TehamaPulse.com was the first new member to join the Corning Chamber of Com- merce for 2010, joining on Jan. 8. TehamaPulse.com is owned by Micah and Jennifer Stetson of Red Bluff. The Tehama Pulse Community Calendar is a comprehen- sive event calendar for Red Bluff, Corning, Los Moli- nos and other parts of the county. They began develop- ing the site in May, 2009 and it’s been live since August, 2009. After missing an event that Jennifer really wanted to go to because they found out about it after the event had happened, they decided that an easy-to-use, all-inclu- sive, always-accessible community calendar was need- ed. "We wanted it to be user-friendly and fast (we hate waiting for websites to load); we wanted it to include as close to everything as we could get. TehamaPulse.com is the result." They are a husband and wife team. Micah is a com- puter programmer, specializing in open-source soft- ware. He is writing the site’s software from scratch, using his own ideas of how to make a website database fast and easy to use. Jennifer worked at the Tehama County Department of Education in the Library/Media Center for several years and has almost a decade of data entry and cataloging experience, so organizing all the events in the county was a natural for her. Both Micah and Jennifer are very involved with the Tehama County Community Concert Association, the Red Bluff Community Band and the Tehama County Friends of the Library, serving on the boards of all three. They are also involved with the Tehama County Salvation Army and Tehama Together’s 211 Steering Committee. Jennifer said, "We currently have no children, to the disappointment of both sets of parents and siblings, but we do have a lovely dog, a Texas blue lacy-mutt named Remington." If you want to keep informed as to what is happen- ing in the county check them out at www.tehama- pulse.com. If you know of an event coming up or would like to list your monthly meetings, please send infor- mation via email to jen.stetson@tehamapulse.com or give them a call at 727-8744. • Car Show T-shirts – The Car Show T-shirts are in. And, those who reach their leader- ship destination get there through hard work and dedication. Many also achieve their executive-level dreams through networking with colleagues and professional organizations, and connecting with everyone and every opportunity that could possibly help them reach their aspirations of becoming a business leader. Networking is vital to achieve leadership in today’s market and con- tinue to be effective as a leader. Leaders who continually network have access to resources that can help them solve problems and gain per- spective and fresh ideas that will ben- efit themselves, their teams, and their organization. Those who choose not to network once they achieve success miss out on great opportunities to become better leaders. Whether you’ve held a leadership role in your organization for many years or are newly crowned with upper-management status, you may have stopped networking thinking it has nothing left to offer. If you’ve stopped investing in your network, it’s important to pick it back up. Check out these key tips to help you in your job – no matter how high up you are on the career ladder. Join multiple organizations. You’ve heard the statement, “never stop learning.” Well, this couldn’t be more true. Networking with fellow colleagues at conferences or social events can keep you informed and up-to-date with current trends in your field. But, don’t stop at groups that only pertain to your industry. Join other clubs or organizations that interest you outside your scope of employment. The more you know, the more your leadership will improve. And, opening your eyes to other job niches just might give you some bright ideas to help you succeed in the future. Mingle with everyone. Whether you do this with- in your company or at net- working events, make sure you talk to everyone – not just upper manage- ment. Talking with other leaders can help you learn new management styles, give you inspiration, and pro- vide you with a sound board when you need advice. Don’t limit yourself to just the leaders in your company. Meet with leaders outside your com- pany who see things from someone else’s view. It’s always good to get an outside perspective to cover every angle of an issue and gain new insight. Also, speak with and listen to people who are not in management. This will help you get an idea of what people who aren’t in upper management value in a leader, some of their concerns, and what kind of leaders they like to work for. To hear the unfiltered thoughts of individuals not in management positions, it might be best to talk to peo- ple outside of your compa- ny. Lisa Hansen Join a committee. Don’t just be a fly on the wall. Try running for a position on the board of an organization. Eventhough you’re a leader in your company, this shouldn’t stop you from becoming a leader in your community. This will not only increase your creden- tials, but it will give you an opportunity to give back to the organizations that helped you in your leader- ship quest by volunteering your time and expertise to help oth- ers in your market. The truth of the matter is that no matter how far up the career ladder you climb, people are observing you and will follow you as long as they believe in you as a leader. This means that it’s important to continue to grow in your knowl- edge. And, networking may just the right opportunity that can help you become the best leader you can be.
