About 100 family members and community supporters attended the pot luck event. On April 7, Master Sergeant Kerry Tugman, USMC (ret) visited the recruits by surprising them with a demonstration of what a real Marine Corps Drill Instructor is like. Tugman served two of his 23 years in the Marine Corps as a Drill Instructor. The demonstration was uplifting and motivating for the recruits. As the recruits sounded off together with, "Yes, sir!" Tugman positively shouted back with “Outstanding. Keep up the great work. Each of the three units was allowed to promote 10 percent of its recruits meritoriously and the Lassen County Young Marines produced a recruit who was named Ray Jacobs Battalion Honor Recruit. Each unit was allowed to award the Fighting Heart Award for never giving up. The Ray Jacobs Battalion repre- sents the 1st Battalion, California Reg- iment, 6th Division, which covers Ari- zona, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana. A number of supporters were pre- sent for the graduation ceremony, recycling must be empty and triple-rinsed. Plastic drum containers 33-55 gallon in size must be quartered. Sergeant Major Annie Bennett pre- sented an American Flag to the Marine Corps League, Detachment 1140, Tehama-Red Bluff , that was flown atop Mt. Surabachi along with sand from the island. Detachment 1140 was represented by Gunnery Sergeant Milton Goings, USMC (ret), and Marine Veterans Harold and Bertha Morreira. The non profit Young Marines of the Marine Corps League is not a recruiting tool for the military but the discipline learned can be taken into all other aspects of a young per- son's life.
