THE COUNSELOR 2 T he road to Delta Chi was full of coincidences for Dewey Camp '56. Not knowing if he would be attending e University of Alabama or not, Dewey received an anonymous $600 scholarship and two weeks later, was on a train bound for Tuscaloosa. Being from Mississippi, Dewey didn't know anyone until a member from Delta Chi introduced him to the fraternity while at lunch the beginning of freshman year. e next few days would become what Dewey has described as "a place of encouragement and support." Music has always been a part of Dewey's life, but he was able to realize his potential while at Alabama. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in Music, as well as his Master's in Music from Indiana University. He is now a retired Professor Emeritus aer 33 years as a Professor of Music at San Francisco State University. Dewey's life centered on music and academics, but being a part of this Fraternity helped Dewey accomplish many things through the encouragement and support from his Brothers that he might otherwise have not. "Delta Chi contributed so much to my expanded campus life, including running in the campus election and winning the position of Editor for Rammer Jammer, the campus humor magazine," Dewey explained. A balanced campus life helped prepare him for a demanding career in music, as well as military service. Dewey recalls many Brothers and Alumni who were there for support, especially the late Dan Saltsman '56, who offered his continued guidance, and Richard Shelby '57, who encouraged him to think about law school and get more involved on campus. Others include Jeff Coleman Sr. '29, who was a Chapter founder, as well as their "BB" Walt Granger '50. ough his career has taken him far from Alabama, Dewey was able to visit the Chapter in 2014 and connect with Brothers Charles Carlin '57 and Jim Merrell '58, who nominated him for the Coleman Award. Giving back financially has been one of the ways that Dewey has been able to say thank you for everything the fraternity has given him. He shared, "My living with Delta Chi brought me early on toward a fuller awareness of life." Dewey now spends his time reading, investing and walking, as well as spending time with his four children and five grandchildren. Dewey is humbled and honored by the Coleman Award from the Chapter, and is deeply appreciative of all who have unknowingly contributed to his full life. "ank you, thank you for all you've added to my life and well-being." You can connect with Dewey at campdew@aol.com or (415) 587-6106.
