TEHAMA BEAT Easter — It’s a season — Part II Easter is all about access. Our access to the Lord our God is a given in the wake of His death and res- urrection. His access to us is the ques- tion – inasmuch as we answer His call when He stands at the door and knocks we gain eternal and abundant life – but there are neither substitutes nor short- cuts. The way we give Him access is a process called repentance. I used to think repentance was what you did to prepare for the Gospel. Mark 1:1-4 paints a very different pic- ture. The first verse reads that this is the beginning of the Good News itself; the remaining verses speak of John the Baptist bringing a message and a bap- tism of repentance to the people. Luke 1:11-17 prophesies the birth of John – a man who will go forth in the spirit and power of Elijah – to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children – to pre- pare a people for righteousness. Repentance is a lifelong process of turning away from the life we have cre- ated and toward the life God has pre- pared for us. It is independent of our sins (although they too must be aban- doned in the turning) and it is a privi- lege only God can give. The opportu- nity to repent is not a run-up to the Gospel; it is the Good News. My favorite story of an offered opportunity for repentance comes out of John 8 in the story of the woman taken in adultery. The woman has fled to Jesus and the Pharisees pursuing her demand his blessing as they stone her to death for being caught in the act of adultery. Jesus does not upbraid them for their hypocrisy – how is it that they are looking in her bedroom window, where is the man, and have they actu- ally read Deuteronomy 24 – He only asks who is without sin amongst them as He writes in the dust and effectively draws a line in that dust. Ironically, any who step over that line to stand with Jesus and the sin- ful woman will have granted Him unconditional access to their lives. From that access point He can both heal and teach; but any who remain where they are have declined to repent – turn toward Him – and have denied Him that access through which He can give abundant life. Tragically, they all are the credible witnesses if we will be – but we have to turn away from the refuge we find in refusing to risk our comfort for Him – and toward the only real comfort in the universe, which is in our proximity to the One who demanded nowhere to lay His head. Jim and Diana Wilson GodTalk return to their homes – stuck in the lives they have created. The woman accepts His challenge to go and sin no more – safe in the arms of His love. The woman at the well – recounted in John 4 – presides over a happier opportunity for repentance. On the strength of her witness she – and her whole village – repent of their smug confidence in their grievances against the Jews and turn to this Jewish man- who-is-God for real life. When we take the story of His love poured out- in-us to our friends and neighbors we act in repentance and give Him access – just as our friends do when they accept our witness and come to see for themselves. So many of us want to either have a private relationship with God (there is no such thing) or throw a Bible at people and call it witness. God is trying to throw us at the people for Whom He died and rose, because we ALL EQUAL Rushdy El-Ghussein, for- mer president of the Islamic Society of Greater Kansas City: It is natural for people to group together with others who are similar, but this can lead to prejudice and other injustices against those out- side the group. Also a white has no superiority over a black, except by piety and good action. place. I remember well the day I said yes to His Lordship. That night I went for a walk and sat on the edge of a cliff in the starlight near my apartment in San Diego, California. As I looked into the night sky I saw a gigantic cross hovering over the earth like something out of a Dali painting. I stared for a long time, until I knew it was no illusion at which I stared, and then I asked, "What do you want?" He answered as clearly as running water, "All of you." It has been forty years and I still struggle to understand, and to fully respond. But I know it is a process; I know it begins with sharing the story of His life shared with me; and I know it is and has been the adventure of a life- time morphed into eternity.
