W hen reminiscing her college years, Shannon Brittan O'Hanlon '01 remembers the football tailgates, Homecoming and Greek Week festivities, hayride and themed parties, and late-night conversation in the annex, but what truly makes those memories special is that they all include her Alpha Phi sisters. "These memories, luckily pre-Snapchat and Instagram, are priceless," she said. "Being an only child, I've always considered my closest friends as part of the family. Not only did Alpha Phi provide me with countless friends, but I simply cannot imagine life without the ones that are now family." To Shannon, membership means sisterhood. It means a home-away-from-home and sisters you call on when you're having a bad day or have exciting news to share. It means real conversations and finding a group of women who are the perfect combination: sincere, smart, and sporty. And lastly, it means supporting the chapter years after graduation. "I truly believe that I wouldn't be where I am today without Omicron. By giving back, I hope it will allow other young women to find their true potential, as it did for me." Since graduation, Shannon has made an effort to support Omicron financially whenever possible, and has seen the benefits that come from alumnae donating their time and guidance as well. "Either way, giving back to something that shaped my life is an easy choice," she said. "My hope is that Omicron provides other young women the same amazing experience I had while in college and beyond." Shannon was so sure in her belonging in Alpha Phi that she made the risky decision to suicide bid. For her, 906 S. Providence was the place she felt herself, where she belonged, and what felt like home. She spent her undergraduate years making unforgettable memories and taking on leadership roles that would be defining moments in her young adult life. She hopes that future generations of Alpha Phi women find friendship and leadership through their membership in Omicron, the same way she did.
