10A Daily News – Saturday, October 20, 2012 Religion Faith&Worship religions have the same goal? Voices of Faith Is it correct to say that all McClatchy Tribune ALL PATHS LEAD TO A SUPREME BEING A.M. Bhattacharyya, an active member of the Hindu community: From the perspective of Hindu faith, the answer is "yes." Let us explore the purpose of a religion in our lives. Every human being has a body, mind and indwelling spirit, called soul. Just as food provides physical nourish- ment and a book provides mental nourishment, religion pro- vides spiritual nourishment through prayers, ritualistic wor- ship, meditation and so forth. Afterglow: National Day of Repentance awareness, which helps build compassion, kindness, purity, self-control and a sense of service to fellow humans, and it takes us to a higher and higher level of spiritual wisdom, ultimately to the realization of divinity within. For a combination of reasons, both historical and geo- graphical, the human race has found different ways to nour- ish its innate spiritual cravings. Seers, saviors and prophets came on Earth at different periods of history and in differ- ent societal settings. They had exceptional power of com- munion with the Supreme Being and preached their sacred messages to the masses. Though the paths are divergent, and approaches are different, all these paths lead to the same goal. The real purpose of religion is to raise our spiritual The first National Day of Repen- tance of the 21st Century has come and gone with an amazing impact on the Body of Christ and – I hope and believe – on the nation we call home. Of course I made a point of stating repeatedly that God's call for such a day was part of His larg- er call to His Church to enter a sea- son/culture of repentance without reference to the nation itself. I stand by those statements. However, in a nation and culture in which more than 80% of the people identify themselves as part of that Church it is reasonable to expect an impact beyond the mere scope of its mem- bership even if we discount the supernatural dimension. But truth- fully, there is no way to talk about NDR apart from that supernatural dimension. A hymn from a Hindu scripture beautifully expresses this point, "…As the different rivers having their sources in different places mingle their water in the sea, so, oh Lord, the different paths which people follow through different leanings, straight or curved, all lead to Thee." (Shiva Mahimna Stotram, verse 7). STRIVING TO LEAD A RIGHTEOUS LIFE Syed E. Hasan, Ph.D., Midland Islamic Council: Assum- ing that the goal is to lead a life of compassion, justice and peace, then most of the major religions are similar. Howev- er, regardless of what choice an individual makes in embracing a religion, one needs to use logic and reason to analyze the message conveyed in its scriptures and tradi- tions before coming to a decision. One also needs to keep in mind the historical context of the evolution of human civilizations and how in the ancient times, when we lacked an understanding of natural phe- nomena, humans worshipped almost everything, only to learn later that it was all part of normal workings of nature. This awareness led to the evolution and refinement in our The Day had no means of reach- ing Christians across the nation other than through word of mouth and a couple of newsletters with a combined circulation under ten thousand, my regional-to-NorCal radio program, and chance hits on the web site. Yet more than one hundred sixty ministries signed on for the Day via the web site in thir- ty-five states and six nations. Through anecdotal sources we esti- mate that an equal number partici- pated without having formally reg- istered. These would include the eleven ministries in one California city that participated even though only one registered, and the local (Redding) church that devoted an entire week of nightly meetings to prayer and repentance for the Day without signing up. We have received e-mails hundreds of e- mails filled with the joy of a trans- formed perspective following par- ticipation in the Day. One ministry leader told me she first heard of NDR when I spoke at faith system and, guided by the prophets and messengers who delivered divine messages, we now have some major religions that have laid down a set of rules that its followers are required to observe to achieve the end result of leading a righteous life filled with internal peace and tranquility. In the modern age of technology it is easy to ignore the role of religion and disobey all its rules to achieve material success. But a life spent solely in pursuit of personal happi- ness without consideration of others and complete disregard of the basic virtues of truth, justice and kindness is most unfulfilling. Psychologists have found that an unrestrained life without any sense of accountability brings misery, frus- tration and endless turmoil. Dr. Berin Gilfillan, founder and president of the International School of Ministry (ISOM) will be speaking at the 11 a.m. service on Sunday, Oct. 21, at Abundant Life Fel- lowship, 21080 Luther Road, in Red Bluff. The community is invited to attend. The Rev. Gilfillan was born and raised in South Africa and formerly her fellowship group locally last summer. When she heard that repentance is more about toward Whom we turn than from what we turn away – and that it is a privilege rather than a punishment according to Mark 1:1-4 in the Bible – it perma- nently and dramatically re-wired her relationship with God. It did the same thing for me when I read that passage several years ago and actually saw it for the first time. NDR was planned to both coincide and com- mune with the Jewish Day of Atonement – Yom Kippur. That meant it began at Sundown Sept. 25 and ended at Sundown the 26th. Pastor Jeff Daly and I con- ducted a joint service in his church in Lake County the evening of the 25th. In attendance that night was a cousin of Chris Stevens, the mur- dered American ambassador to Libya. Her presence made our prayers of repentance for the com- placency of the Church all the more poignant when mixed with our awareness that it is the influence of Christ that made this country the strong bulwark against tyranny and protector of the downtrodden we have always been at our best. We prayed for her peace and healing, and for a new spirit of justice in the Body of Christ. We stressed – and I am sure oth- ers who met for corporate worship across the country did the same – that our focus is to be on God Him- self, rather than on whatever sins we recognized and discarded. As I keep saying, the word repentance means to turn about. It includes – implicitly – the abandonment of worked with Reinhard Bonnke Ministries. After graduating from Bible School in California, he moved to Nigeria, West Africa as a missionary with his wife, Lisa, and two small daughters. The couples goal was to turn local churches into ministry training centers and church planting cen- ters. Using English video curriculum put together James Wilson GodTalk those things we do which give no glory to our Maker, and a re-com- mitment to those things we neglect that glorify Him. But the truth is we begin with praise and worship rather than self-examination because it is only in His presence that we can even come to appreciate our areas of shortcoming. And even acknowledging those areas is a privilege because – like barnacles on a ship – they gouge the places to which they cling and impede movement through the water of life. In the ser- vice each person was invit- ed to ask God to show what needed showing and no one was required to speak to anyone but God about what they saw. He showed me personally a couple of longstanding areas of unforgiveness – and gently pried them from my hands. We prayed for each other – with special inten- tion for the new vision God would give – and headed out into the night with a renewed sense of purpose. We are already gearing up for next year's event – set for Sept. 13 and 14. Any who participate – inside or outside the institutional Church – is going to discover that the guilt and shame traditionally associated with this kind of exercise exists only outside the exercise. Entering in to the process of repen- tance only leaves us liberated. The web site is still dayofrepentance.org. James A. Wilson is the author of Living As Ambassadors of Relationships and The Holy Spirit and the End Times – available at local bookstores or by e-mailing him at praynorthstate@charter.net. International School of Ministry head to speak from a number of respect- ed ministries, they tried a giant experiment in Nige- ria. The results were stag- gering, registering almost 18,000 students and start- ing 140 training schools. The couple returned to California to create the International Curriculum.
