p. 2 The DePauw Phi Phi Delta Theta Provided a Gateway to a Full Life and a Successful Career for Gregory "Greg" T. Mutz '67 L ike many impulsive 17 year olds, Gregory "Greg" T. Mutz '67 made a snap decision to join Phi Delta Theta. Although he was quick to join, he is grateful for the experiences he made as an Indiana Zeta. Greg connected with Phi Delta Theta through a good high school friend, Steve Young '67, and Steven's older brother, Stu Young '65. "During recruitment they make you feel like a million bucks so it was an easy decision for me to join." While at DePauw, Greg served the Chapter as recruitment chairman and as an officer for DePauw's KTK interfraternity council. The leadership skills learned enabled him to achieve his objectives as an infantry lieutenant in Vietnam all the way to becoming the chairman and CEO of AMLI Reality Co. After serving in Vietnam for a year, Greg returned to the states and enrolled at the University of Michigan Law School. There, Greg graduated in 1973 with a law degree. He began working for Mayer Brown in Chicago, Ill., but moved to New York after a personal job invitation to work for White Weld by a client. "In 1980, I decided to make a go of it myself as an entrepreneur, and began the long journey of challenges and experiences that formed who I am and what AMLI has grown to be today." Greg started AMLI together with John Allen, a partner he met at the law firm of Mayer Brown. Today, AMLI employs over 900 people and manages approximately $7 billion in Class A high-quality apartment properties in nine different markets coast to coast. "Phi Delta Theta and DePauw University inspired and challenged me intellectually. They gave me the tools and real-life experiences to develop my leadership skills. I wouldn't be where I am today without their influence." Greg offers undergraduates solid advice, "Get exposed to as many different things as possible. Use your undergrad years to develop your mind and your ability to think and reason." He encourages students to strike a balance between focusing narrowly and becoming widely educated. It is also just as important to learn what you don't want to do as it is to learn what you are passionate about. "Jobs that exist today didn't exist 20 to 30 years ago, so remember that most likely the economic, legal, business, and scientific landscape will change dramatically from when you are at DePauw to when you retire." He also reminds students, "We grow the most when we are tested the most." Looking back at his time with Phi Delta Theta, Greg remembers most his participation in intramural sports. He laughs as he recalls the good times he had when training. "I participated in the Little 500 bike team and the Phi Delt intramural football team." Greg was on the DePauw swim team and enjoyed that experience a great deal. Greg and his wife, Laura, live in Chicago, Ill. His love for physical activity has only grown since college and Greg has participated in about 15-20 triathlons. He tries to compete in a triathlon about every other year in Olympic distance. He also spends some of his free time reading. If you would like to reach out to Greg, you can e-mail him at gmutz@amli.com. Outstanding Leadership Undergraduates Show the Chapter's Fortitude at DePauw A s the 102 men of Indiana Zeta ended the 2016-17 academic year, they did so with great confidence and pride. I am proud to report 10 percent of men on the Depauw campus last year were Phi Delts. After the spring and summer awards season, the Chapter collected eight campus and International Fraternity awards for scholarship, ritual, alumni communications, Chapter operations, and campus and community service. The Chapter once again had a GPA above the all- men's, all-fraternity, and all-university averages. This top three positioning made a big impact on the Chapter attracting the student athletes and leaders we wanted during recruitment. Phis Dominate DePauw Athletics More than half of our members are varsity athletes across eight different sports. Seven team captains are Indiana Zeta Phis. The DePauw men's tennis team was led by Dan Rodefeld '17, Patrick Farrel '17, John Daseke '17, and Nate Wallace '17. Dan Rodefeld was named first team all-NCAC and Patrick Farrel was named second team all- NCAC. We also have three other members on the men's tennis team. The DePauw Men's soccer team led by seniors Tommy Hinkebein '17 and Harrison Glover '17 ended the season in round 32 of the NCAA tournament. The soccer team roster includes 12 more Phis. DePauw men's baseball finished second in the NCAC conference and received an at large bid to the NCAA tournament, where they defeated the #5 team in the nation. Among the 21 Phis on the basketball team are Max Cohen '17, Tate Stewart '17, Riley Futterknecht '17, Ryan Hurston '17, Ryan Grippo '17, Reid Pittard '17, Andrew Quinn '17, Aiden Cain '17, Joey Plesac '17, and Nick Horvath '17. Phis Excell Locally and Across the Globe Away from campus, brothers are just as prominent while representing Indiana Zeta. Eric Peterson '18 is interning with an environmental firm in New Zealand and Jack Leahy '20 spent his summer excavating historical sites in Italy. We also had quite a few Management Fellows students assigned internships at Salesforce, Double Map, Strive Consulting, and Wellington Group. Fall 2016 and spring 2017, we had nine Management Fellows and a few Media Fellows also complete their internships at various companies. Recent alumnus Devon Ross '16 and his startup company, BonFire, hosted internships for Matt Emerick '18, David Hinkebein '19, and Terry Winston '19. As am I, you should be most proud to be a DePauw Phi and none of it could happen without the time, treasure, and talents of our alumni. Yours in the Bond, Brad Lewis '18 Alumni Secretary
