A: I decided to join Beta as a Refounding father my freshman year because it provided me an opportunity to be a part of something that was bigger than myself. Beta offered me a chance to become a better man, make a difference on campus, and leave a legacy for future generations. Q: If you could relive any day or experience you had with your Beta brothers, what it would be? A: At Beta's 175th Convention in Oxford, we petitioned to get the Gamma Psi charter back. After months of preparing, three of us gave a presentation on the status of Gamma Psi and why the colony should become a chapter. I don't think the panel noticed, but I was shaking the entire time. Later on, all the Gamma Psi brothers stood outside the convention hall where the delegates were voting. I tend to be dramatic, so I was pacing back and forth, trying not to hyperventilate. Needless to say, we were successful and received the charter. That night we all went out in downtown Oxford. There must have been at least six different generations of Gamma Psi Betas there. We spent the whole night celebrating. It was such a great feeling to see three years of hard work pay off. I think more importantly, it was amazing to spend time with those from past generations and all feel the same joy and love for what we were doing. Q: Was there anyone in particular that you felt made an impact on your collegiate experience or the chapter as a whole? A: I could never pick just one of my brothers who made an impact on my experience. I think the people who deserve to be recognized are the Beta staff who helped Gamma Psi recolonize and the alumni board who pushed to make it happen. I am lucky to have found Beta. Q: What offices did you hold in the chapter as an undergraduate? A: After recolonizing, I was the chapter's first vice president of programming. I went on to become chapter president, then served for a year as a VP on the Interfraternity Council. Q: Why do you feel it is important for all alumni to reconnect or stay in touch with the chapter? A: I think most of us can say that being part of this chapter made us better men. We should recognize that this happened not because of the badge or songs, but because of the people. Those same people who made us better men in college can continue to make us better for the rest of our lives. We should never stop trying to learn and grow, but we also need to be willing to help others do the same. It's important to stay in touch with the brothers our age, but just as important to connect with the new generations to pass on the lessons that generations before passed on to us. Alex is attending graduate school in Washington, D.C., and plans to make his way into a career in politics after graduation. In his free time you will likely find him exploring the city and local events in town. To contact Alex, send him an e-mail at alexhaddad2@gmail.com.
