CHANGES ABOUND AT KAPPA DELTA House Corporation Works Diligently to Maintain Chapter House T he nine-member House Corporation Board has been busy enhancing and protecting the new Kappa Delta house. As we enter our third year, we continue to adjust to the needs and improvements required to serve 435 active members and 64 residents. The management of 40,000 square feet of space and its use by a large growing membership is a challenge that all sororities are facing. The House Corporation Board meets monthly with campus-wide sorority representatives to share information about the common, everyday challenges of leading what we fondly call our new sorority houses, or boutique hotels! This group covers a wide variety of topics and situations: house maintenance, lawn maintenance, food selection and preparation, safety issues, recruitment and Bid Day logistics, utilities and Wi-Fi management, staff issues, and any problems that may arise. If an issue emerges, a representative will inform the group of how the situation is handled, as well as the steps to avoid future instances. We have truly united for support and improvement of management of our beautiful new house. There is not a one-size-fits all answer, but this process helps us assess options and make informed decisions based on our shared interest in our members. The University of Alabama has also taken an active approach to this process through extensive communication and execution of our operations, since we are captive to growth plans and the implication on recruitment quotas. Our newest board members have significant business experience and professional expertise that we know will strengthen the House Corporation Board and our future plans. Lee Boles '78 has been in the oil and gas distribution for more than 30 years; similarly, Frances Turner '78 has been heavily involved in running her family car business for more than 30 years. Spence Stallworth '79 has been chief clinical nutritional specialist at University Hospital and has offered catering services for years. They all share an invested interest in ensuring we provide a safe and welcoming home for our members. With donations, we have been able to provide the house with enhanced features, including additional cameras in the stairwells for increased safety, 55 additional chairs to accommodate attendance at Chapter meetings and other group sessions, and durable, synthetic wood flooring for the dining room. We have also been able to evaluate meal services and options, as well as meet with the University of Alabama to manage utility usage and costs. This is an ongoing process and we welcome input and questions as we work to present the best image for Zeta Chapter to members, recruits, alumnae, and the community.
